Problem with Firefox - maybe use Edge instead?

Morne van der Merwe

Good day list,

This is going to be a quite lengthy email.  I will describe my problem as best as I can.  I’m running the latest version of NVDA as well as the laters version of Windows 10.

I downloaded Firefox extended version and installed it on my computer.  I saved quite an amount of bookmarks.  Last week I did something wrong and Firefox wasn’t my default browser anymore.  I went to my list of default programs in settings, but couldn’t find Firefox there.  Not even my sighted wife didn’t find it.  I went on Mozilla’s page and the solution I found was to uninstall Firefox and reinstall it again – which I did.  After reinstalling, I ended up with a folder on my desktop called “Old Firefox data.”

Now I get to the problem.  Before I uninstalled Firefox, I got 36 bookmarks saved.  After the reinstallation, I bookmarked 3 new webpages.  They are not listed among the 36 bookmarks.  However, when I hit enter on “show all bookmarks”, then I find the last three bookmarks.  Only those three are in “show all bookmarks”.  All my other bookmarks is outside that folder.

Then I tried Edge.  But when I open Edge and press the alt-key to open the menu of Edge, nothing happens.

Can somebody help me with the Firefox issue?  Or is it better to start using Edge?  I personally find Edge more rresponsive.  On the other hand, all my bookmarks are in Firefox.

Any help would be apreciated.

Kind regards

Morné

With regard to Firefox, you can use Bookmarks Manager (CTRL+SHIFT+B) to manipulate your existing bookmarks into whatever folder structure you'd like.  It behaves not unlike File Explorer in that you can cut and paste, create new folders, etc., for your bookmarks.   I cannot say how your current folder structure is arranged but it sounds like your old bookmarks are in a subfolder and your new ones at the top level (or perhaps vice versa).

With regard to using Edge, in Settings, there is a section named Import favorites and other info with the button Import from another browser.  If you activate it you will find you can import directly without having to export from the other browser or you can choose to go the old school method of exporting to an HTML file and importing from that file.

I never worry about where Book marks are in Firefox.  I'm not sure where they are now.  Try using the bookmarks search feature in Firefox.  When you are in the main window, issue the command control I.
You will be placed in a book marks search field.  Type part or all of what you want to search for.  Tab once.
There will be a list of results.  See if what you want is there.  Press enter on it to activate the book mark.  When the page finishes opening, turn the book marks feature off with the same command you turned it on with, control I.

If you type something and find the result as the second in the list of results, you can type whatever it is, tab once, then down arrow once to be on the second item, then press enter.  This will work consistently unless you add a new book mark that shows up before the one you are looking for.  It's possible but not likely unless you add another book mark to another page on the same site.
If you want to see all your book marks in a list, no matter what folder they are in, open the book marks feature with control I.  Don't search.  Just tab once.  You will be in a list of all your book marks.  Move to the one you want and press enter.  then after the page loads turn the book marks feature off again.

If you have to move the book marks back before this feature works properly, the list can help you do that.  But in general, not just in dealing with this situation, using this feature means you will never have to organize book marks again.

What about Waterfox?
I'm not sure how come you lost bookmarks, this sounds a little bit like something in FF got currupted, but in my experience FF has a good recovery and fix system that normally sorts it out.
I now use waterfox as its just more reliable than Firefox and all my old add ons work in it, it also imported all the firefox bookmarks without any issues.
