dialogue boxes and go silent with 2016 NVDA Version
David Russell <david.sonofhashem@...>
Hello Brian and list,
I did see your posts, and thank you for the ways to initiate buttons and links. I also notice from recent discussion here, that buttons seem to be a bit vague in definition as they can convey different things. You suggested updating to the latest version of NVDA for windows 7. How do I designate that particular choice of versions? Thanks. -- David Russell david.sonofhashem@... |

I foresee a potential short-term confusion, so I'll try my best to explain what's going on with updates: NVDA has just one version: latest stable. There are more builds than latest stable, but for now, you don't have to worry about that. In short, there's no need to worry about keeping multiple versions (unless you chose to have multiple portable copies), and in case of installed version, one and only one version will be in use at a time. If you check for an NVDA update today, you'll either get: * 2017.3: if you have Windows 7 original build (7600). * 2018.2.1: if you have Windows7 SP1 (build 7601). To check which Windows 7 build you have, open Start, type "winver" (without quotes), and press Enter. If About Windows dialog says you have build 7601, then you can use 2018 releases. There are so many changes between whichever 2016 version you've got and 2018.2.1. Some of these changes may have impact on how you view browse mode elements, hence we advised using 2018.2.1 before continuing. Cheers, Joseph -----Original Message-----

The NVDA web site hopefully includes comments such as: Last stable version for Win 7, although others have posted the version you want You would think a button visually would look like a button, however, I believe they may be depicted as square or other shapes. Of course with speech output, unless a button says Octagonal red button, you do not know its visual shape or color. My Bank likes to say click the big green button in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. I guess I can get the whereabouts of a button or link, however I have to go hunting for it. First letter navigation for links makes finding the right likened a snap. Brian From: nvda@nvda.groups.io [mailto:nvda@nvda.groups.io] On Behalf Of |

Is there a way anyone with such an old version of windows 7 can get the service pack installed, still? Last time I checked it tried to push to anyone like that windows 10.

Not that I myself need it, as most people I know only have sp1 as presumably the update system took care of most of this already on most machines. Brian bglists@... Sent via blueyonder. Yes button will find buttons with letter b, but as has been said before there does seem to be some strange web designers out there who make links look like buttons for their own daft reasons.

I also hat the submenus we often see, some trigger focus mode and tend to be like a kind of combo box, while others are just lists that appear on a clickable. Trying to figure them out especially when not constant on a site can be very irritating, almost as bad as those dynamic combo boxes that jump out sometimes other times not till you hit something. its all ignorance of how a blind user uses their site I imagine, and laziness and a team of people maintaining the site with no hard and fast conventions on how the house style wants it to be.
