NVDA key to be assignable to any key
Aman Singer
Hi all,
I’m not sure what the best method of proposing this is, I have put the following up as an issue at
https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/8836
And am also posting the below to the list. If there is a better way to make suggestions, or if I ought not to post through one of these methods, I would appreciate being corrected.
Allowing the NVDA key to be any key on the keyboard
I am using NVDA from iOS through a VNC application. I find that this works fairly well except that the application will not properly pass through the capslock or insert key as a modifier. I am, therefore, unable to use the NVDA commands without another program being involved to modify the keyboard. I have used autohotkey to map the right alt key to the insert key. Sharpkeys and other registry-based keyboard mapping applications don’t work. I would like the ability to have the NVDA key set to any key on the keyboard that Windows can see. I have seen keyboards with, for example, the ` key next to the space and there is always, of course, one of the alt keys. Would this be wise and possible? I have searched the issue archives but have only found one similar issue, issue 225, which has the same request but as a modification for the mac. That issue, made in 2009, is still open but I’m not sure of its status. Given that NVDA, unlike Jaws, will happily work with VNC input, this may be worth doing as I have yet to see a VNC application which sends the capslock key as a modifier properly. |

Hi Aman, I don't have a comment on the validity of the issue at this stage (it seems a reasonable question to ask at least), but having created an issue as you have done is definitely the best way to have it addressed by those who can comment on the technicalities of whether there are any barriers to implementing it. Here in the group is also a good place to get comments and other people's thoughts on it and have that discussion, so yes, I think you've done all the right things. Actually you mentioned an older issue - I haven't looked that one up, but if it's the same, it's possible one will get closed as a duplicate of the other (if that happens, subscribe to the other issue, and add any extra comments there as well). Not so sure they are the same. When using another device to control the machine its more like the remote add on situation I would imagine.

The question really is, what key could one use that is not important in any other setting if its hi jacked for the nvda key. Might be interesting to see if the Shark works and kind of see what they did if it does. I'm thinking of some kind of double tap of a key with the other key you need or something like that. Hi,
The difficulty, of course, is that each person will have his own useless key depending on his circumstances. That is, the Mac user might want to use one of the control keys, I want to use the right alt, others might want to use the ` key, still others might use backslash... A user-definable key would do away with the need for judging which of the keys is most useless and allow the user to choose the key which is most convenient. It's also worth noting that people might want to control things from modified keyboards, sticks, etc, and again, defining by keycode rather than any hard-coded value would allow such people to do what they wanted. Obviously, this would be in addition to the current system, the issue first proposing it even suggested a hidden option and, so long as it's documented, I think that would work well. There is no doubt that the current setup is the most suitable for the vast majority of people, this is just an idea for the few who might want it.
