Some applications take a long time to close

You could try with JAWS or Narrator or something
else. I would think the usual reason for doing such comparisons would be
to try to determine if NVDA is causing a problem or if the problem is
unrelated.

I just use timing is all. If it takes 5 seconds to close word with nvda on and you shut down nvda and close word then start nvda after 3 seconds or what not you will know. You could also use narrator to close winword and know if it still slow at closing.
