Slightly Sluggish Response in Thunderbird Using 2018.4 Beta 1

David Goldfield

Hi.

I installed 2018.4 beta 1 today using Espeak on Windows 10 Pro, build 1809, 64 bit.

I'm noticing a slightly more sluggish or delayed response when navigating within email messages using Mozilla Thunderbird. Specifically, when I press the letter K to move by links the response time is a bit slower. Pressing left/right arrow keys also is slightly slower. When I uninstalled the beta and reinstalled 2018.3.2 response time was back to normal. Occasionally, I've noticed similar behavior using Google Chrome. Have others seen this behavior as well?

Now on Windows 7, I would say that for me, quite a lot of NVDA in the latest beta feels a little' soggy' compared to the release version. Its only a touch, but its as if you had suddenly upped the screen res with a computer that is a little slow, that kind of feel.
That is not to say its slow, just different.

Brian, I would say that your comments match my experiences with the latest beta. Hopefully, NV Access will figure out what is causing the issue.

It could be that the use of UIA in 10 has resulted in far more emphasis on this and maybe the loops required to find the right API are now slower, but only when on Windows 7 in the main, but in some software where UIA is not used the same thing applies.

Since we have not been having access to the betas as we used to its been hard to see what has been going on, as we only get the alphas, and sometimes these are broken so many of us will not use them as everyday versions as we used to with the master snaps when we had access to them. I feel that auto testing is fine, but subtle things like speed are not spotted as a problem until a user gets into the loop
Having said that of course whether its really an issue is hard to say. I can feel it, but in the main things are not a problem as I'm not a fast typist and the odd hiccup or pause could well be due to a windows update, who knows?

I would bet that most testing is done on Windows 10 of which there are so many concurrently running versions it has to be a total nightmare for any software writer.
I have and still do felt and feel that Windows as a service that is evolving sounds great, but in practice there are so many changes that compatibility is really getting to be a bit like throwing a dice.
I'm staying on 7, having been completely put off by windows 10 changes on my other machine.
