Firefox browsing bug in NVDA 2018.4

Kwork

When on a webpage, and any page at nvaccess.org will work, tabbing to the next link anywhere on that page will shoot me up to the top, and to the first link on that page, no matter where I started.

Windows 10 home 64-bit.

Firefox 64.0, 64-bit.

NVDA 2018.4

While I would experience this behavior on past versions of NVDA, it is now constant.

Thanks.

Travis

This can't be assumed to be a bug in NVDA and I'm somewhat skeptical.  You mention the NVDA web site.  I get similar results with an old version of NVDA and Firefox.  And I see something like this happen sometimes on other sites.  But not on most.  If I move down the page, using the skip blocks of links command on the home page and, when I am at nonlink text, if I then turn off browse mode and tab. I am taken to the top when not in browse mode.  I am also taken to the top while in browse mode.  If, however, I stop on a link while down arrowing or moving with k, I can then tab and move to the next link or control, as expected.  This is true both with browse mode off or on.  If browse mode is off, I assume that the browser responds just as it would if no screen-reader were present.  So this may be a problem with coding on the NVDA home page, which is the only page I tested on the site, or it may be a browser problem.  I don't know if it could be an NVDA problem but based on what I've just reported I'm skeptical.

I'm afraid I'm not reproducing this here, either, at least not on the groups.io page for this message. After reading the message, I was able to press Tab to get to the Reply button, then Tab a few more times to get to the edit field where I'm now typing my reply. However, I noticed earlier while proofing a post on my blog at https://abbiescorner.wordpress.com, when I pressed Tab within the post, it took me to the top of the post. I updated my NVDA just yesterday, so will see what develops.

Have you restarted the computer after installing / updating NVDA?  It's amazing some of the weird things that happen when everything else is working seemingly normally in that period between updating and restarting.

If you've done that, are you using any add-ons?  If so, are they up to date (Joseph made an add-on updater which is an add-on to check for out of date add-ons which can help with that).  Next, try restarting NVDA with add-ons disabled and see if that helps.

Failing all that, if you could send me a copy of your log, I can have a look.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Thank you Abby. With the lack of responses to my question, I figured it was somewhat isolated to me.

If you don't mind experimenting a bit with your installation, go to the official NVDA site:

https://www.nvaccess.org/

The main page will be good enough as it's site wide for me.

Use the headings shortcut, the letter h, to go down a couple headings. From there, and it doesn't matter if you do it immediately, or up and down arrow a bit, tab once.

If you hear the following words,

NV Access Empowering lives through non-visual access to technology

You'll know that you've been returned to the top of the page.

Any other response means that you're not reproducing the same thing I am here.

Thank you.

Travis

I believe I have restarted since, but will try all suggested suggestions now just in case.

All the above has been done. Restarting computer, restarting NVDA with add-ons disabled, using updater to make sure all is up to date.

How do I generate and get you the log?

With NVDA running, the easiest way to get the log is to first ensure you have repeated the steps to cause the problem, then press NVDA+F1 to open the log viewer, CONTROL+A to select all, CONTROL+C to copy and then come to an email and CONTROL+V to paste.

Before doing that, if you set NVDA's log level to debug, it gives us the most information - you can do that by pressing NVDA+CONTROL+G to go to the general settings, TAB to log level and select DEBUG, then press ENTER.  Then do the steps which cause problems before opening the log and copying it to send.

Kind regards

Quentin.

How do I generate and get you the log?

Have you restarted the computer after installing / updating NVDA?  It's amazing some of the weird things that happen when everything else is working seemingly normally in that period between updating and restarting.

If you've done that, are you using any add-ons?  If so, are they up to date (Joseph made an add-on updater which is an add-on to check for out of date add-ons which can help with that).  Next, try restarting NVDA with add-ons disabled and see if that helps.

Failing all that, if you could send me a copy of your log, I can have a look.

Kind regards

Quentin.

While I would experience this behavior on past versions of NVDA, it is
now constant.

Thanks.

If you don't mind experimenting a bit with your installation, go to the official NVDA site:

The main page will be good enough as it's site wide for me.

Use the headings shortcut, the letter h, to go down a couple headings. From there, and it doesn't matter if you do it immediately, or up and down arrow a bit, tab once.

If you hear the following words,

NV Access Empowering lives through non-visual access to technology

You'll know that you've been returned to the top of the page.

Any other response means that you're not reproducing the same thing I am here.

I can.
1. Open https://nvaccess.org/
2. Move to the first heading, We believe that every Blind + Vision
Impaired person Deserves the right to freely & easily access a computer!
3. Press tab, I'm at the top.

Now repeat this, but move to the second one, nvAccessLimited inside the
frame.
I'm not placed at the top again.

I assume this is a Firefox bug and not related to NVDA, because tab has
no special meaning to NVDA here, at least according to input help.

Interesting. You're right. When inside a frame, tabbing till you get outside the frame doesn't throw things to the top. When outside the frame, tabbing from anywhere on that page, and all others I've tried so far on the site, throws it to the first link at the top. Let's see how other browsers do.

Chrome: things work normally except at the "We believe" heading. Tab forward doesn't move the cursor. Shift+tab, then tab, lets things be normal.

IE works as expected.

Edge works as expected.

Did you read my detailed message about this problem?  Be directly on a link.  Use the letter k for convenience.  You will be directly on a link.  What happens when you tab?  When you are on nonlink text what happens?  I found very different behavior on the NVDA site home page in these two different situations.

Chrome: things work normally except at the "We believe" heading. Tab
forward doesn't move the cursor. Shift+tab, then tab, lets things be normal.

IE works as expected.

Edge works as expected.

Hi Group,

Following Tyler's steps exactly, I can confirm this on the NVDA page.

However, this seems to be something to do with the coding on the page.  When I try the same steps on jaws-users.com and microsoft.com, I cannot reproduce.

I can.

Travis,

I can not duplicate your issue.  I am running windows 10 pro, NVDA
2018.4 and firefox 64.0 64 bit.

If you don't mind experimenting a bit with your installation, go to
the official NVDA site:

https://www.nvaccess.org/

The main page will be good enough as it's site wide for me.

Use the headings shortcut, the letter h, to go down a couple headings.
From there, and it doesn't matter if you do it immediately, or up and
down arrow a bit, tab once.

If you hear the following words,

NV Access Empowering lives through non-visual access to technology

You'll know that you've been returned to the top of the page.

Any other response means that you're not reproducing the same thing I
am here.

Thank you.

able to press Tab to get to the Reply button, then Tab a few more

However, I noticed earlier while proofing a post on my blog at
https://abbiescorner.wordpress.com, when I pressed Tab within the
post, it took me to the top of the post. I updated my NVDA just
yesterday, so will see what develops.

Hmm, no. I didn't see it. Looks like I'll need to check out gmail's spam on the web, something I need to periodically do to remind gmail that messages that are legit are being marked as spam. Seems the settings hold for a few months, then Google's memory grows short. I'm sure I have it.

Did you read my detailed message about this problem?  Be directly on a link.  Use the letter k for convenience.  You will be directly on a link.  What happens when you tab?  When you are on nonlink text what happens?  I found very different behavior on the NVDA site home page in these two different situations.

Interesting. You're right. When inside a frame, tabbing till you get
outside the frame doesn't throw things to the top. When outside the
frame, tabbing from anywhere on that page, and all others I've tried so
far on the site, throws it to the first link at the top. Let's see how
other browsers do.

Chrome: things work normally except at the "We believe" heading. Tab
forward doesn't move the cursor. Shift+tab, then tab, lets things be normal.

IE works as expected.

Edge works as expected.
