NVDA elequence question

Darren Harris

Hi all,

I have installed the code factory eloquence voice on my GPD win 2. I have 2 days left of the trial of eloquence. At the end of it, do I have to buy the eloquence voices? Or do they revert to a free version of eloquence? I have eloquence on my other machine but I never paid for that as it shipped with my laptop when I purchased it. So am not sure about this.

Sam Bushman

You do need to purchase it.

You will have to pay for the code factory after the trial has finished

After the trial period it will work no more until a licence is purchased

Not really, There were sound alikes around that worked as sapi 4, but they have issues, and there was a hacked version which was buggy which we cannot discuss here for legal reasons.

If a list allows such discussions, it is opened to legal liability.  It is illegal to use such programs.  Promoting their use is illegal and lists that allow it may be shut down by the owner of whatever list serve the list is on and, though very unlikely, the list could have legal action taken against it by the owner of whatever intellectual property is being used illegally.

Well I certainly haven't gotten a hacked version of it. It's probably the sappy version which I assumed I could still get with the latest version of NVDA by that I mean a clean install.

We had this discussion dozen of times in the past years and sometimes it ends up with somebody bosting a link to illigal software. I believe talking about cracks and illigal software belongs to other mailinglists and not to this NVDA related list.

Cheers and happy new year to all of you!!

Hi. This question may have already been addressed but you do have to purchase the software after or during the trial. It does not revert to freeware after the trial. You can purchase it from Codefactory or from ATguys.com.

It expires and becomes unusable, however code factory is still in your NVDA prefs you must delete it manually.

Also nvaccess cannot be seen in any way to condone illegal activity, its fine if you want to set up your own list and do it, but responsible organisations have to be seen to be working within the law. Who is going to donate or fund anyone who condones ripping off a company?
Anyway we have had this discussion here many times before and its getting rather like Grroundhog day.
Read the rules of groups.io and the moderators guidelines for this list before getting annoyed.
We do not make the world we all have to live within its rules.

Well if you paid for it and its stopped working you can of course legitimately contact the vendor and they should sort you out. I think one of the problems we have encountered in the past was that after a certain version, Jaws stopped allowing outside software to use any speech synth they supplied with their software. This meant that in some peoples eyes, they had to buy the same voice twice. Thus somebody wrote a hack to allow the voices to be used in NVDA.
At that time I did speak to in those days Freedom Scientific and they told me that the stipulation that it could only be used with Jaws was a condition of allowing them to supply the voices, one assumes, it cost them less to licence them this way.

Well I certainly haven't gotten a hacked version of it. It's probably the sappy version which I assumed I could still get with the latest version of NVDA by that I mean a clean install.

Not really, There were sound alikes around that worked as sapi 4, but they have issues, and there was a hacked version which was buggy which we cannot discuss here for legal reasons.

Wasn’t there a free version of it? I thought that there was?

Hi all,

I have installed the code factory eloquence voice on my GPD win 2. I have
2 days left of the trial of eloquence. At the end of it, do I have to buy
the eloquence voices? Or do they revert to a free version of eloquence? I
have eloquence on my other machine but I never paid for that as it shipped
with my laptop when I purchased it. So am not sure about this.

I think he was thinking of The IBM Via Voice talking web browser voice from the days of Windows 98..
I still have that but being Sapi 4, its of limited use nowadays and although it sounds very much like Eloquence its is not quite as good, I use the word good advisedly, as I don't like Eloquence very much myself.

If you like artificial voices rather than the real sounding ones, then I guess Espeak for UK English speakers is still very good and fast.
I have to nail my colours to the mast here as I wrote a few of the variants in NVDA back some years ago.
Quincy seems to be the most popular one for things like laptops. its not so resonant as the normal voice.
I am loathe to suggest the Speech player in Espeak add on, as it will probably not work well in the next version of nvda unless it gets tweaked but for now at least it has a passing resemblance to Eloquence without being actionable!

Can I ask for a source of that info, please? This is definitely untrue in most countries. An admin is not and will never be responsible for what it's users post, if that weren't true, no one would dare to make web 2.0 websites (like Facebook, Wordpress etc). The only responsibility of the admin is to remove content from their website if they get an official letter from a copyright owner stating that this content is illegal, with all the necessary statements. I don't know why many admins in the blind community think otherwise. Even so, no law can prohibit discussing such content if it's not shared. Discussing how much such a content is worth is, in most cases, allowed. That's why the /r/piracy Reddit flourishes and Reddit itself doesn't do anything about it. They don't have to. THey have a strict "no posting of content" policy. They only put general links to websites, not even direct links to content, and they're perfectly fine, even though most of that subreddit consists of threads like "is downloading xxx from torrents safe" or "on what website can I get books in language xxx for free". Discussing technical processes used to make cracks or avoid drm might be illegal, though. If there's someone who can be sued, it's definitely the developer of such cracked software, and probably the one who put it there, maybe the one who posted the link but that's questionable.

Of course the information presented above should not be considered legal advice, and actually doing some reading is recommended. Doing some reading is always recommended, blindly repeating what others have said never does us much good, and actually that's what many website owners do, that's why we have that Eloquence and GDPR dramas in the first place. Most of that is wildly unnecessary. I personally think that admins (of websites in general) should do as little as the law allows them to, respond to whatever they're obliged to respond and not overdo it out of fear.
