tabs on web page

Don H

I have a web site that I am accessing using Google Chrome on a Win 10 1809 system.  I am using NVDA 2019.1.

The web page has a series of tabs in the middle of the page for showing the description, specs, faqs and reviews.  How do I open one of these tabs?  Hitting enter or space bar  on them does nothing.

Gene

What keyboard layout are you using?  Do you know how to route the simulated mouse and left click it?  If you don't, ask here.
Move to the tab you want to work with.  Route the mouse to it and left click the mouse.
There is a good chance that will cause the tab to do what you want.

I am using the desktop keyboard setting.  I am unsure how to route the mouse.  I thought it was by using the insert and divide key on the numpad.

using default settings in NVDA, that is how you route the mouse.  Hold nnumpad insert and press divide, or slash, as it is more often called.  Then release both keys and left click the mouse with just slash.  See if that activates the tab and causes the content you want to be displayed.

Is this a page we can all go and look at?
Also, it might be that the browser is important.
also I've had so called tabs that put stuff elsewhere on the page but do not indicate to the screenreader anything has changed.

I am using Google Chrome and the web site is listed below.  There are several tabs for description, specs and so on.  If I try to use insert slash on the tab NVDA says nothing and when I follow by the left click nothing happens.

It probably won't say anything automatically.  If you activate the tab in that way, the contents of the page may change to reflect the name of the tab.

I just checked.  As I thought would likely happen, when you left click a tab, the text changes under the tabs.

Never assume that if you don't hear speech after taking an action on a web page, that nothing has happened.
Also, If you have JAVA script disabled or are using a script blocker, I don't think the tabs will work.  I believe they are JAVA script controls.

Down arrow from the tabs or move in any other way you want to read the material.  When you select a tab, the information on the page changes below the tabs and you read it as you do any web page information.

OK here is what I am doing and it must be something wrond.  I use the arrow keys on the web page until it says tab specs.  I then hit insert slash then slash again to left click.  Nothing happenss on the pace.  I have sighted help use the physical mouse and it opens the specs on the laser.  Forgive this old man but what the heck am I doing wrong?

I'm not sure but the first thing I'd say to try is to make sure you are in object navigation mode.  Issue the command numpad insert numpad 1 until you hear either that you are in object navigation or you hear an announcement something like no previous navigation mode.

Then follow the entire procedure you described and see what happens.

one more case that proves my contention that NVdA should automatically revert to object navigation when you leave the window you are using something different in.  Who knows how many problems how many people have because they don't know that a lot of things won't work properly unless you are in object navigation mode.

It probably won't say anything automatically.  If you activate the tab in that way, the contents of the page may change to reflect the name of the tab.

I am using Google Chrome and the web site is listed below.  There are
several tabs for description, specs and so on.  If I try to use insert
slash on the tab NVDA says nothing and when I follow by the left click
nothing happens.

I just tried this page with NVDA and Edge. I only had to press spacebar to select another tab.

Interesting how different browsers work with screen readers.

I'm not ready for Google Chrome.  I don't think I'll be ready for the new Edge either.

Subject: [nvda] tabs on web page

I have a web site that I am accessing using Google Chrome on a Win 10 1809 system. I am using NVDA 2019.1.

The web page has a series of tabs in the middle of the page for showing the description, specs, faqs and reviews. How do I open one of these tabs? Hitting enter or space bar on them does nothing.
