Edge is quite different from IE. You don’t have menus or menu bars like you do in browsers like IE and firefox.

Part of the problem is that Internet Explorer is essentially dead, &

Edge is still pretty iffy regarding accessibility.

Would your friend be willing to try Firefox or Chrome? I myself

personally like Firefox, but that's just moi. The truth is that the

commands from browser to browser used to differ for screen reader

users, thus resulting in having to learn new commands for each browser

you wished to use, but screenreaders have standardized a good bit over

the past few years, so that's no longer a consideration, in case

that's a fear of his.

Could you perhaps also please consider providing a link to the page

he's having trouble with, Curtis?

Hi Jackie!

I use Narrator and NVDA to use Edge!

And I have very good luck with it.

I can brows many sites, stream media with it, and so on.

I like edge, especially using Narrator!

hi

If you do want to try out edge the microsoft edge dev desk top version seems to work very nice.

the app version works ok but now with this new version i would use that .

The link to this version is https://www.microsoftedgeinsider.com/en-us/?form=MO12FO&OCID=MO12FO

It is chromium based and is almost like chrome its self in the lay out.

If you used chrome before you would know what i mean.

Hopefully before long i got a basic tutorial going up for it this weekend to the web site.

Plus it will make it a lot easier for some one to locate it and take it for a test drive if you get what i mean.

Brian's Mail list account

I'd try it with Firefox or Chrome, as IE is very much a problem on web sites, and Edge is rubbish until they bring out the chrome based one later on.
I think it you bring up the nvda menu with insert n then you can find most of the bits of nvda to fiddle with. Make sure its the latest version of course but also in the case of windows 10 get the latest version of the windows 10 app extender from the add on site.
From the original description it sounds like somebody uninstalled an old office product. Put that back if they did as I've found this can screw up web page use since whoever wrote the office uninstall screwed up the registration of some crucial windows dll files. I know the registration tool covers most of the problems but there are still some outstanding. I have also found that if avast is on the system its a pain and needs removal assuming you can without reformatting the machine that is.

I appreciate the info about configuration not going away when
reinstalled. How would I reset it to default. I don't know who
originally installed this software, but as far as I can tell he has not
modified anything in it.

The OS is Windows 10, Release 1809, using IE11 for his browser. I did
try Edge and it made no difference.

After working on it earlier today and listening to his description of
when it happened I thought it might be due to a conflict with this
months Windows updates. I know they frequent break other applications.

your friend/client messed up something in his NVDA configuration, that
is located in the users roaming folder & doesn't go away simply w/a
reinstall. There is an item in the NVDA menu to revert the
configuration to factory defaults. It's a last resort, though, if he
has settings already saved. NVDA also has a logging facility. The last
log can be viewed by pressing the NVDA modifier key + f1. You can view
these yourself or send 1 to the list if you feel stuck. Also, another
thing to try is to see if your friend has any addons installed, &
disable them if so. That applies both to NVDA itself as well as to the
browser.

troubleshooting them is similar to troubleshooting other pieces of

Let's not neglect very simple questions that might be so obvious they aren't asked.  Your description says it reads the first line or two, then stops or repeats.  But can the person move down the page using the down arrow key or can he use the read to end command to cause reading to continue?

What Windows update are you describing?  A full upgrade or the usual security and stability updates?  I don't recall if you said you reinstalled NVDA but if a full update occurred and the problem occurred immediately after the update, uninstalling and reinstalling the screen-reader would be the first thing I would try after the usual reboot.

I'm not sure whether it'll help somehow, but just thought I'd chime in on this with this piece of information.
There's also an nvda-old.log file which can be accessed going to %appdata%\NVDA, which keep all of the information of the last time NVDA was restarted.

get it to read the page.
I tried removing and reinstalling NVDA in case there was some file
corruption or issue with the current profile settings, this did not help.
Any idea  how to proceed?
Thanks in  advance for your help,

Hello,

I hope you can point me in the right direction. I am a computer repair /
technician who has a client who is loosing his eye sight.

He choose to use NVDA as his screen reader and for several months it has
worked just fine for him. Starting last week it quit reading web pages.
It reads the banner, (top line or two), stops and does nothing or it
repeats it.

My knowledge of screen readers is limited, I do have a couple of other
clients who use Jaws, but I really am in over my head and yet I hate to
leave my friend without somewhere to turn.

He especially enjoys LSU sports website and  I tried without success to
get it to read the page.

I tried removing and reinstalling NVDA in case there was some file
corruption or issue with the current profile settings, this did not help.

Any idea  how to proceed?

Thanks in  advance for your help,

Curtis Golightly
