Do you mean this applies to *any* website, or just a few specific ones?

Can you give us an example URL to see whether other people have the same experience? Some websites do perform strange things which prevent you being able to do it, but in general it should certainly work. Regards, Antony. On Thursday 25 April 2019 at 18:18:46, Robert Doc Wright godfearer wrote:

A user interface is like a joke. If you have to explain it, it means it doesn't work. Please reply to the list; please *don't* CC me. |

What is your question? Are you asking if others are experiencing this behavior? If so, what version of NVDA/Chrome are you using? I have not seen this here on my end. Thanks. On Thu, Apr 25, 2019 at 9:18 AM Robert Doc Wright godfearer <godfearer@...> wrote:

It is also worth noting that if you are using NVDA Add-Ons, Chrome Extensions, or both you need to do the following:
1. Start NVDA normally, Chrome with extensions disabled - Check if issue continues. If no, start by disabling all of your Chrome extensions and re-enabling them one by one until the problem recurs. If yes, Chrome extensions are not the culprit. 2. Start NVDA with Add-Ons disabled, Chrome normally. Same basic logical procedure as for Chrome, but from the NVDA side. 3. Start NVDA with Add-ons disabled and Chrome with Extensions disabled. You'd only get to this if you didn't find the culprit so far, and if the issue still exists or not it's time to file a bug report. If the issue still exists then it's some interaction issue between "naked" Chrome and NVDA. If the issue doesn't exist, then it's an issue in the interaction between an NVDA Add-On and Chrome Extension. Report all of each that you're using on each side. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1809, Build 17763 Growth for the sake of growth is the ideology of the cancer cell. ~ Edward Abbey

I already explained yesterday how to go back in a
way that has a good chance of working well and will save a lot of diagnostics
that may or may not accomplish anything. Use shift enter when following a
link. the link will open in a new window. Use alt f4 to close the
window. You will be back exactly where you were on the other page on the
link you followed.
I should add that it may be that you will have an
inconvenience doing this. You'll have to see. I haven't tried it
enough to know if it is a general problem or just an annoyance on one very old
machine I have. You may see the original page in the new window and you
may need to alt tab then release alt tab and then alt tab again to get to the
proper window.

Hi
have you got it to open in tabs or windows?
i think the default is tabs in google chrome.
if you are using tabs or not sure do the following use the CTRL + 1 to 9.
For example if there are only 3 tabs you would use from CTRL + 1 to 3.
I think on mine if i remember right i set a home page and made that one default and it allows me to use the alt key + left arrow key to go back a page or the opposite if i have already been to that page just before. It says some thing like open in a new page and the web address is put in.
Plus i can also use the CTRL key + 1 to 9 if needed.

What happens to me is that I will search for information. Go to a likely page. Alt left arrow to get back to the original page and nothing happens. I’m going to try Gene’s suggestion.

I haven't tried using the go back command much in
Chrome. I don't know what happens now. When I tried it in an older
version of the program I wasn't reliably taken back to where I had left off on
the previous page. I was taken back to the top the one or two times I
tried the command. That made the procedure worthless. My method
works because the former page is always opened and you go back to the page and
are where you were. The browser or screen-reader doesn't have to remember
where you were and take you back to that place.

I'm pretty certain some web sites stop this from working deliberately, by trial and error you can soon find out which and use tabs instead. One site I found was a sub site of a UK council where the only route back was to click on a weird clickable labelled breadcrumbs.

Although he mentions Chrome its by no means just chrome. as I have said elsewhere, I suspect from my experiments that its the web site itself running some script that maintains the same page when you attempt to go back.
