Hi all,
As the subject suggests, I am unable to start or restart NVDA using the shortcut key combinations.
Ctrl+ alt + N
Any particular reason you guys think is preventing me from doing so?

Please respond.
This is on my office computer.

Hi

Have you checked the shortcut key combination has not been accidentally changed or removed?  Find the NVDA entry on your desktop and press alt+enter.  Tab down to the shortcut key field and check that it is set to Ctrl+alt+n, if it is not just type n then tab to Ok and press enter, if it is, press escape.

Cheers

Chris

Your subject line says alt space.  What does that mean?  Are you using the correct shortcuts?  Are you using an installed or a portable version?  Also, a setting in Windows may be preventing shortcut commands from being set.  Have you tried creating your own short cut command?

Well in addition to all of the others comments. You do not say if it used to work. Did you originally have it auto start and now its stopped doing that? If you did then something has changed on the machine. If its a shared machine best get some eyes to find out or better still ask them exactly what they did or we could be chasing our tails all day. One assumes the sound on the machine is not muted, a common thing for sighted users to do by fair means or foul.
Otherwise I had an occasion when a program installed itself and pinched the shortcut for n itself without even asking!

Hi, I can’t confirm your problem.  I can start NVDA using the hot key. Control alt N Just a few minutes ago now, I don’t know weather I did not press hard enough or my old keyboard to my new laptop batteries are running low.  I did the hot key using the laptop keyboard.  It worked.  When I shut NVDA down and retried it with my old keyboard I had from my win 7 computer. It worked.  I was able to start NVDA.

I don't know if you sorted it out as I haven't seen any answer from you regarding what others have said.
So here I go with my suggestion.
Even if it has been deleted, shortcut changed or whatever, it's easy peasy to go there on the shortcut properties (assuming it is still there) and set it up again, manually of course.
In case the shortcut itself have desappeared, go to the NVDA's  folder, usually \Program Files (X86)\NVDA and then recreate the shortcut from there.
This is assuming you have NVDA installed, not portable. Otherwise I don't think you'd be using this shortcut thing anyway.

Hi, I’ve seen this happen to me on this new windows ten computer.  NVDA’hotkey disappeared when I took its update.  I had to manually recreat the hot key.  I don’t know why that happens.  I never seen this on my older computer. Just with this one.

My hot key disappears each time I update NVDA. The reason for this is, I don't use the desktop shortcut and I also use a different hot key than the default. I prefer to assign the hot key ALT+CONTROL+V and I use the LNK found at C:\programdata\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\NVDA to do this. It would be nice if the NVDA install/update was smart enough to honor custom configurations like mine.

This is a new computer
While installatioon, I unchecked the option to show shortcut on the desktop. But how can it affect the hot key function. However, now how can I make the hot key work?

Hello, What I do is this, I do alt enter. Then tab until you hear something like create short cut. You check it by doing  alt control N while in the NVDA program or whatever screen reader you are working with.  Or, you can do it when you instal it.  If that doesn’t work, In my case this happened to me.   I did create the short cut. But when I shut down NVDA I restarted it again. But nothing happened.  I just went in there and redid it. Then finally it worked.  Sometimes with fresh new computers you have to make sure it took. Sometimes it will do the short cut but when you shut down NVDA or whatever you have on your new system if it doesn’t work and you know it did. You may have to go back into that program and do it again. But make sure it works.

This procedure is a bit odd.  NVDA installs a shortcut on the desktop, and usually control+Alt+ the letter N starts NVDA.  That stopped working.  I tried refreshing the shortcut, but it still didn’t work.  Actually nothing happens.
My plan is to delete the shortcut, identify (in Explorer) the path to the exe file, send to the desktop, and assign the letter N.  Windows should supply the control and the Alt.
That’s what Ive historically done.  Does anyone know of a reason why that shouldn’t work?

Until that happens, have you considered copying that shortcut to a new name at that location (or perhaps you could just rename that one), and give it your custom shortcut key?
I would imagine the NVDA installer would not replace a shortcut with a different name.

Hi there: Arlene here. I seen a message on this list 2 or 3 weeks ago. It had steps to have Nvda start if you are on a web page. I accidently deleted the message when I was going to braille it out.  Whoever sent these steps. Can they be resent again?  Thanks. I do want to write them down!  It was to do with either NBDA not starting or crashes.  Thanks and have a good day.
