Reaching the comments' section on YouTube video

Hi guys,
Quite a while ago I posted here about the very same subject and at that time there was a workaround that really worked like a charm.
Trouble is, it doesn't seem to work anymore.

So, would any of you happen to know of a way to get to the comments' section on a YouTube video in a reliable manner?
Lately, for me, it's been a hit and miss. And honestly, let me tell you, it has been more of a miss than a hit. Really not fun to waste so much time with something that should be easy peasy, as I like to say.

I'm sending this one to the NVDA add-ons list as well, in case someone thinks it'd be a good idea to make an add-on to work with it and give it a solution once and for all.
Were I happen to have enough skills with it I could, should and would very well start such a project.

Cheers,
Marcio.

Hi

I answered a similar request some weeks ago when I recommended a site designed for blind users which gives an ad free interface to search for and play YouTube videos.  The link is:

http://www.povidi.com/YourTube/

After opening the site, use the e key to jump to the search edit box, then  hit the spacebar to move into focus mode (unless you have auto mode switching set in NVDA).  Type in your search criteria, then pres tab to move to a combo box where you set the number of results per page.  Set this to 10, 20 or 50, then press tab again.  You landin another combo box where you can choose between videos, channels or playlists (I only ever use videos which is the default).  Tab again to the search button and press spacebar to run the search.

The results appear in a numbered list which you can access using the h key.  Press this repeatedly and when you find one you want to play, press tab to move focus to it and press enter.  A dialog box opens for the chosen video.  Again use the h key to jup to the different sections, which include player controls, pla details, video information and video comments. You can use the b key to jump to the various player control buttons.

After video has played, use alt+left arrow to return to the results list dialog at the point where you left it.

Cheers

Chris

Hi

Does the E key or F key not get you to that area. I tried it with the browse mode keys and it took me there.

I am wondering when you do get to that field and it says public comment or what ever it said are you changing into focus mode just in case it is not going into the mode correctly. I guess also it depends how you have it set as well.

hello,

Other than a reference to the add-ons list, I saw no reference to NVDA in this thread. This seems like an issue of navigating a particular website, and not an issue with NVDA, or learning to accomplish a task with NVDA that NVDA isn't working with or something.

If i want to jump to a comment field, I might press h to get to the comments heading, and then tab twice to get to the appropriate edit box. There seems to be an issue where the edit box is not recognized as such by NVDA, so pressing e won't jump there. had the question been referencing the edit box not being recognized by NVDA, or had the message referenced NVDA in pretty much any way, it would have been on topic.

thanks.

I just used NVDA with the "e" command on some live TV you tube channel

It jumped to the comment editable section as it should be.

Actually this is marked by a heading, the problem is that you never know when said heading will show up.
One can keep going back and forth even for some minutes and sometimes it's not there at all.

@Nimer, sorry for not referencing NVDA on this topic. My bad, it won't happen again.
Just for clarification, I'm using NVDA when trying to reach this section and well, the other things I've already said. It's absolutely a "hit and miss".

Hi guys,
Quite a while ago I posted here about the very same subject and at that time there was a workaround that really worked like a charm.

Cheers,
Marcio.

Here it doesn't happen at all. At best, I can reach the comments using the "jump by heading" command.
Using Firefox, so I think it should work the same way as Waterfox. Go figure!

It jumped to the comment editable section as it should be.

If i want to jump to a comment field, I might press h to get to the

There seems to be an issue where the edit box is not recognized as such by
NVDA, so pressing e won't jump there. had the question been referencing the

You might, but at least if you are using NVDA, with Firefox, on youtube.com, there is perhaps an 80% chance that you will never reach comments that way.

Comments on youtube.com, seem to start with a heading level 2, which specifies the number of comments. But, whether the H key will actually jump you to that heading, seems to depend on where you are on the page when you start trying to look for it.

If you are, for example, in the related videos section, you can press H all you like, and will probably never get to comments. If you press 2, you will likely be told that there are no more headings at level 2, even though we know, that somewhere after those related videos, is a heading level 2 dealing with comments.

The most reliable way I have found to get to youtube comments, is to press, from whereever I happen to be on the page, control-end, to jump to the end of the page. Then shift-2, which should, most times that I know of, get you to the top of the comments section. You may then press e to go to the edit field where you can type a comment, or use the down arrow or other navigation, to reach other people's comments.

This, along with the "show more" button, seems to work like a charm.
But then this is exactly what I said about the other workaround. So let's see how long this one will last :) I hope it really lasts because I happen to be one of that weird people that like to see random comments on random videos. LOL

What are we talking about?  The accessible Youtube site or the main site?  On the accessible site, the various items have text labels above them such as comments.  I believe the page may list shortcuts for getting to various sections.  If people haven't read this, its another example of why people should look around on unfamiliar pages and not assume things are of no interest.  Its the same reason people should look at a complete e-mail message sent on whatever topic a member sends one on, on an e-mail list.  They will see footers with all sorts of useful links such as unsubscribe, perhaps nomail links, and maybe other useful links and information.

Aside from that, I didn't bother learning the shortcuts.  I may have learned ones I was interested in if I was going to use the site at all frequently, but there is a text label above every section.  There is a comments label.  If you use the screen-reader's search feature from the top of the page and search for comments, you will find it efficiently.

If people are talking about the Youtube web page, you may find things differently, if they are consistently accessible on different pages.  At this point, it isn't clear who is talking about what.

The reason you find the comments field by using headings from certain parts of the page and not others is probably because the page changes depending on where you are.  Some pages change what they show depending on where you are on the page.  The description sounds as though a Youtube video page does this.

I'm not sure how common this is but I have seen it on occasion.

Hi guys,
Quite a while ago I posted here about the very same subject and at that time there was a workaround that really worked like a charm.

Cheers,
Marcio.

Yes, you are right, youtube pages definitely do this; the comments are not visible unless you scroll down a bit, I believe, although I’m not positive exactly how it works.

I have successfully commented on a few things, but, it is generally hit-and-miss, as has been said before. It sometimes seems as though the cursor is not staying in place, or not remaining where one thinks it should be, and so typing does not always yield the expected result!

The reason you find the comments field by using headings from certain parts of the page and not others is probably because the page changes depending on where you are.  Some pages change what they show depending on where you are on the page.  The description sounds as though a Youtube video page does this.

I'm not sure how common this is but I have seen it on occasion.

I personally understood it as a "how to use NVDA with the youtube website"
question, otherwise the nvda-addons mention wouldn't have made sense.  But my
subjective opinion is irrelevant since I didn't start the thread.

> If i want to jump to a comment field, I might press h to get to the comments heading, and then tab twice to get to the appropriate edit box. There seems to

You might, but at least if you are using NVDA, with Firefox, on youtube.com,
there is perhaps an 80% chance that you will never reach comments that way.

Comments on youtube.com, seem to start with a heading level 2, which specifies
the number of comments.  But, whether the H key will actually jump you to that
heading, seems to depend on where you are on the page when you start trying to
look for it.

If you are, for example, in the related videos section, you can press H all you
like, and will probably never get to comments.  If you press 2, you will
likely be told that there are no more headings at level 2, even though we know,
that somewhere after those related videos, is a heading level 2 dealing with
comments.

The most reliable way I have found to get to youtube comments, is to press, from
whereever I happen to be on the page, control-end, to jump to the end of the
page.  Then shift-2, which should, most times that I know of, get you to the top
of the comments section.  You may then press e to go to the edit field where you
can type a comment, or use the down arrow or other navigation, to reach other
people's comments.

Yep, same here. And I believe the same thing happens under chrome. I never watch youtube videos in chrome and rarely do I do so on my windows pc. What i have done on the mac side of things is do a seatch for the word "comment" after pausing the video with k. Then I just figure out what is what but it is even worse under the mac with chrome. Go figure.

Does the E key or F key not get you to that area. I tried it with the browse mode keys and it took me there.

I am wondering when you do get to that field and it says public comment or what ever it said are you changing into focus mode just in case it is not going into the mode correctly. I guess also it depends how you have it set as well.

Hi

It was the main you tube website.

there are a few different ways to get there.

The find command is most probably the quickest. then you might have to arrow into the edit area.

going to the bottom of the page with ctrl + end then shift key + 2 will land you on that area it seems to hit it every time for me.

Or usually the F key for form fields will get you there but you might have to do a a few times.

I think it depends what you want to do. In most cases i use the B for buttons to play them and only look around when i need to. Some times the arrow keys may be needed to get into the edit area.
