Hello everyone, For a while now, I have been having problems with the select a block of text function on nvda. When I place the start marker by pressing nvda f9 everything is fine, the start marker is announced. When I go to the end of the block to press nvda f10, the curser winds back to the beginning and only selects and places in the clipboard the first letter of the section. I have tried this on various browsers and the same result each time and with different types of content. I have been having this problem for a while now and am currently using 2019.1.1. I was hoping that installing the clip contents designer would solve the problem, but something similar seems to happen.
help would be appreciated.

Hi Ali,
Firstly, just to confirm that you are familiar with the current behaviour of selecting with the review cursor - NVDA+F9 to mark the start of the block, move to the end of the block and NVDA+F10 once to select the block or NVDA+F10 twice quickly to select and copy it. If you use the review cursor to select and then press control+c to copy for instance, it may not work depending on whether it is possible to select text with the conventional text cursor. If you press NVDA+f10 once and NVDA reports "Cannot select text, press twice to copy", then you will need to copy by pressing NVDA+F10 twice quickly.
It might be worth restarting NVDA with add-ons disabled, just to ensure there are no add-ons playing up. Press NVDA+Q then down arrow to "Restart with add-ons disabled" and press ENTER to restart, then try again.
Otherwise, if you set the log to debug (in the general settings with NVDA+control+g then tab to the log level, down arrow to select debug and enter to close), repeat the actions and then copy the log to an email to me, I can have a look at exactly what is going on.
Kind regards
Quentin.

hi quentin. its the issue that i can confirm too! i thought that maybe there is some problem in my windows, but now, i am happy that someone confirmed my issue, and wished that you present us a working solution. i only tested with firefox and nvda selection sometimes works, sometimes not. for example: i press f9 when i am in a particular heading. then i press f10 for going to the next heading, i wish to select entire content of previous heading, and its the reason that when i go to next heading, press f10 to all content of previous heading to be selected, that sometimes i observe the mentioned issue and sometimes not! i dont use addons, so, certainly its not related to addons.

With Zahra's example,
If you press H to jump to a heading, press NVDA+F9 to start marking, then press H to jump to the next heading and NVDA+F10 twice to copy, it will copy the first heading, and everything up to the second heading, plus the first letter of the second heading. The extra character at the end is because when selecting text in say Word, you select up to the character past the last one you want - in a read only text field, you often cannot move past the last character, so it selects that extra character.
I just tried that on a couple of pages in Firefox and it seemed to work. Zahra, are there particular pages where it doesn't work, or if you try on the NV Access page for instance, will it work one time, but not the next (and does it give an error?)
Ali,
You can find the NVDA logs in the %temp% folder. Press WINDOWS+R, type %temp% and press ENTER then look for either nvda.log (the log for the current session of NVDA) or nvda-old.log (the log for the previous time NVDA was run.
You can email me off-list at info@... (since you can't attach files to a message to the list).
Kind regards Quentin.

Hi Ali You wrote: I tried restarting without addons and it didn't work. Could you tell That is probably because you most likely have NVDA exit options turned off. So, a way to restart without addons without having to change any of your settings, is to do this: Press your windows key and the letter r. In the window that appears, type the following: nvda -r --disable-addons Then press enter. Make sure you get the dashes in the right places. That should restart nvda with all addons disabled temporarily (until you start it again). Hth. Luke

Thanks Luke, but even with all the addons disabled it doesn't work. I've sent the log to Quentin and hope there is a solution.

Hi I have done some testing and if you set “Caret moves review cursor” (NVDA + 6 on number row), to ON, the copy using review cursor feature works, if it is set to off, it just copies the last character selected to the clipboard. Cheers Chris

Chris,
Great work! I had tested NVDA+7, but then had neglected to test NVDA+6, oops!
Zahra, you can either press NVDA+6 and it should toggle the setting, otherwise it is in NVDA's "Review Cursor" settings. For you (using NVDA 2017.3 from memory?) press NVDA+n, then p for preferences then down arrow to "Review cursor settings" and press ENTER. For those using newer versions of NVDA, you can press NVDA+control+g to open the general settings, then CONTROL+TAB down from there.
Kind regards
Quentin.

thanks quentin for your great advice. do you mean this option? Follow System Caret if so, this preference is always enabled for me, but unfortunately sometimes nvda selection does not work for me, but most of times works! and as i promised, i use 2017.2 forever, not 2017.3 quentin, thanks again for your great support, i always say with sincerity and honesty that i dont forget you in my praying.

Quentin.

Hi Ali,
Firstly, just to confirm that you are familiar with the current behaviour of
selecting with the review cursor - NVDA+F9 to mark the start of the block,
move to the end of the block and NVDA+F10 once to select the block or NVDA+F10 twice quickly to select and copy it. If you use the review cursor
to select and then press control+c to copy for instance, it may not work depending on whether it is possible to select text with the conventional text cursor. If you press NVDA+f10 once and NVDA reports "Cannot select text, press twice to copy", then you will need to copy by pressing NVDA+F10
twice quickly.
It might be worth restarting NVDA with add-ons disabled, just to ensure there are no add-ons playing up. Press NVDA+Q then down arrow to "Restart
with add-ons disabled" and press ENTER to restart, then try again.
Otherwise, if you set the log to debug (in the general settings with NVDA+control+g then tab to the log level, down arrow to select debug and enter to close), repeat the actions and then copy the log to an email to me,
I can have a look at exactly what is going on.
Kind regards
Quentin.

Use control c and control v in browsers. The
commands you are using are intended for times when there is no cursor or virtual
cursor. Browse mode uses a virtual cursor.

Which makes perfect sense since you are copying
from the position of the object navigator. People may wish to use this
procedure in other contexts, but it is intended to be used at times when there
is no application cursor and where, for that reason, control c and control v
won't work. I also suspect it may matter whether you are in screen review mode
or in object navigation mode. I suspect you should be in object navigation
mode. if so, this is another example of why NVDA should revert to object
navigation mode automatically when you leave the window you are using screen
review in. How many such examples need to be seen before this is really
seriously considered?

Its on by default. If it wasn't
on, you'd know it. Using screen review commands like numpad 8 for read
current navigator position wouldn't be where you are when editing a
document. You probably wouldn't even be in the same window. It can
be found in what I believe is still called review cursor settings but I don't
know how you get to that item in the new interface.
