trouble with NVDA Menu and content being correctly formatted on web pages

Scott Berry <sb356607@...>

Hello there,

I am having some trouble with NVDA not allowing me to access the NVDA menu and also not rendering elements on all web pages correctly.

I have taken the following steps to resolve this issue:

1.  I uninstalled NVDA, rebooted  and removed everything from c;\App Data\Roming\NVDA.

2.  I have done a ccleaner and that didn't clean up anything in particular with NVDA.

3.  I also uninstalled JAWS and Openbook just to see if they were conflicting and that is not the case.

4.  I installed NVDA, JAWS and Openbook back and the problem still exists.

I wonder if there are other places I should look for any other settings.

You are going to have to be a lot more specific about this aspect and, if possible, provide URLs so that those trying to work through to get the same result you're reporting can actually do so.

When you say you can't access the NVDA menu, can you use other NVDA commands - eg if you press NVDA+F12 does it read the time?  If not, it would indicate an issue with your NVDA key (whether it's set to caps lock and you're trying insert or vice-versa, or a key, maybe N, isn't working or stuck down, etc).  If you can read the time, does NVDA give you an error or beep when you try to open the menu?  In your %temp% folder there should be an nvda.log file which is the log from either the current NVDA session or most recent session (if it is not currently running), and nvda-old.log which is from the time before that.  If you could send me a copy of that log to info@... I can have a look and see if it offers anything.

Otherwise, which version of NVDA are you using? and have you tried another version (eg try both NVDA 2019.1.1 https://www.nvaccess.org/download and NVDA 2019.2rc1 https://www.nvaccess.org/post/nvda-2019-2rc1-released/ )

Another test would be to see if you can open the menu from the system tray.  To do so, go to the system tray, Windows b, type n until you get to NVDA, then press the context menu key.  The NVDA menu should open.

Gene.  If you can open the NVDA menu .

Quentin,

I just tried the time for example and it continues to work as expected. I also tried the menu keystroke in a couple of different places.  It does not work on the desktop but if in a document the nvda menu key stroke will work.  There is no beep or erro associated with this on my side.  I'll also send you that log as well. Please expect it later this evening or in the morning.

Gene,

When doing a Windows B I was unable to find the NVDA icon at all.  This might be another symptom of the problem.

I doubt it.  I think you don't have the notification area set to show all icons.  I don't know enough about the notification area in Windows 10, which I suspect you are using to discuss how it is done.  Or there is a way to have it show NVDA and show what it was showing before, not all icons, if you wish.  others can discuss that.

It appears from your message that there are very specific contexts in which the menu won't open.  We'll see what the log shows.  This sounds like a Windows problem to me.

Scott,
When doing a Windows B I was unable to find the NVDA icon at all. This might be another symptom of the problem.
As Gene suggested it may be that your Systray isn't showing all icons. Have you clicked the Notification Chevron before trying to find the NVDA icon?

Now, to the NVDA Menu. Using older versions of NVDA, I'd have this problem of not being able to access the menu with the keystroke. Even activating the icon on the systay woldn't work.
Usually, restarting NVDA a few good times would solve the problem until the next time which wouldn't take much time to come. So yeah it definitely will help to know which version of NVDA you are using right now.
