How to Stop NVDA saying down arrow when reading command keys?

Mobeen Iqbal

Hello Everyone.

I have a user who is trying to make the transition from jaws to NVDA. He would like NVDA to read keys like tab, shift tab, enter, alt F4 etc but not the down arrow, up arrow, left/right arrows etc. Is there any way of forcing NVDA not to read certain modifier keys?

Very best wishes,

Mo.

I just tried an experiment.  I made a speech dictionary entry for down arrow, writeen in just that way down space arrow and in the pronunciation field, I placed a space.  it worked.  You will have to make dictionary entries for any keys you don't want spoken.  But I don't think you should make one for tab.  there are times when tab is spoken in multipage dialogs such as general, advanced, etc.

You will have to make many entries, for example control home, control end, right arrow left arrow, whatever you don't want spoken.

Hello!

For that, you have to use an add-on named NVDA NVDAExtensionGlobalPlugin, found on:
https://github.com/paulber19/NVDAExtensionGlobalPlugin

Turn off keyboard echo alltogehter. I do this as I don't use it personally. There is also an option under speach somewhare to stop that.

Take care

Hi Rui.

You're a jenius, many thanks for the suggestion! it is working very well apart from not announcing certain modifiers like Alt Tab. Who is the author of the add-on?

Very best wishes,

Mo.

Hi Rui.

Cancel my last, I have found the information. I must've skipped passed it by accident.

Very best wishes,

Mo.

Gene,
I made a speech dictionary entry for down arrow, writeen in just that way down space arrow and in the pronunciation field, I placed a space. it worked. You will have to make dictionary entries for any keys you don't want spoken. But I don't think you should make one for tab. there are times when tab is spoken in multipage dialogs such as general, advanced, etc.
Actually, IMHO that shouldn't be done with any of these entries at all.
Just imagine you are reading a tutorial, then somewhere along that tutorial the author writes something like:

Press Alt + down arrow.

In this case, NVDA will read just "Press alt +" and the instructions won't be followed correctly, unless the person spells the entire line, maybe the entire text.

A better solution would be an add-on for working only with the keyboard case. Something that the NVDA Global Extra Plugin (or something like that, can't remember the exact name) seems to do, as indicated by Rui on another message.

That way no command key will be spoken...

NVDA should have the option to silent some of the command keys...
