Hi all,
Is there a file that I can copy from NVDA which is all the settings e.g. the key echo and startup options etc?
This is so that if I put it on another machine, I can quickly reset it to the way that I like it?

Just make a portable copy of NVDA on a thumb drive or other
removable media and when it asks if you want to copy the user
configuration settings check the box. Now you can use that
portable copy to install NVDA on another machine and all your
current settings and even any add ons you have will be copied to
the other machine.

You can create a portable copy of nvda with all of your settings and run it from the flash drive on the new computer. I think but i'm not sure, if there is a way to turn the portable into an installed copy, I cannot remember at this point in time but good luck.

The nvda.ini file is what I think you are looking for Which can be found in c:\users\your profile name\appdata\roaming\nvda

Yes, you can use a portable copy to
make an installed copy. I have done it a couple times.

Hello,
Adding to this, does either making a portable copy or the nvda.ini
file also copy over custom key labels? I've got a machine that I've
customized how certain keys are pronounced and i'd like to port that
to other machines.

Copying %appdata%\nvda\nvda.ini should give you what you need. You might also grab gestures.ini.
If you are going to go that route, however, you should make sure that the versions of NVDA are the same or similar on both machines.
It would be better to use Roger's suggested method of using a portable copy, since that should also pick up dictionaries, and makes certain that you are using the same version everywhere. It also gets add-ons.

On a related topic, I'll be getting a new hard drive next month. An expert will install it for me, and he should be able to move files and programs from the old drive to the new. But I'm wondering if it would be better to create a portable copy of NVDA on a thumb drive with my settings saved and install it that way. It certainly won't hurt anything to do this. And, if something goes a little wrong with his copying of NVDA, you will have a fully configured NVDA ready to go if you need to install it again.
The more general answer is: if any kind of backup is easy to make, don't even wonder if it's a good idea, just do it. It's a lot easier to have them and not need them.
Plus, it's pretty rare that anyone will give you the advice to *not* back something up, because nobody wants to be the one you followed when you lost your data or configuration or whatever. :)
