Someone got access to my computer
David Moore
Hi guys, I will give you a quick over view and ask some very important questions. Here it is: Well, I typed in a web site, and my small laptop started talking in a different voice saying to call a number from Microsoft before turning off my computer. It gave a number that sounded a lot like microsoft. I called and my wife let them have access, to my computer by typing in a number and other info. and he would not say what company he was from, but he said he was a third party working with Microsoft. He began drawing lines on my screen, and told my wife that I had to pay money to clean my computer from this virus. My wife told him that she was calling the police, and he hung up. However, he was still connected to my computer. I did a quick scan with Windows defender, and it said that I have no problems. I clicked off of all of what he had on the screen. Can he get back into my computer at any time? Could there be a virus still on my computer? What is the number to Microsoft accessability? I called a Microsoft number, and they said they were the geek squad and I would have to pay for them to do anything, but yet he said it was Microsoft. What should I do now? Take care, guys, I am still shaken up. I would had just blown it off, but the message that came up said Microsoft, and it was one number off from a Microsoft sales number. That sounds like a scam! Microsoft doesn’t call you not unless you call them. if you have a friend you trust and is computer sabby let him have at it. I hope someone gives you the disability access to Microsoft. If you and your wife know someone who wont charge you they can look at it. Fix it so he can’t get in.

That is not good. Sounds like I would call the police because the computer could probbally have a virus on it. Or you can always call the Microsoft disability desk. Kenny Peyatt jr.

Hi there: if this persons wife said she’d call the police on that caller. He hangs up, then that is a scam. If you get someone on the disability access. Put your wife on the line and have her explain what she seen with the fake Microsoft dude on there.

Hello David,
Every 2 or 3 weeks, I get a call from someone with a heavy East Indian accent saying that they are from Microsoft and that they have been alerted that I have a serious virus issue on my computer. They want me to let them remote in to my system. This has been a scam that has been affecting the blind community a great deal as reported on several technical lists I am subscribed to. I simply hang up. Microsoft never calls you unsolicited for anything at all.
Could this guy have access to your computer since you let him in already? That is hard to say. He may have access if you have a static IP address. He may have planted something on your system during the brief time he was connected. The only way to be sure is to have a computer expert/technician of some sort analyze your system. I would start with the Microsoft website/phone number that have been referenced on this list.
Good luck.

I think I'd do a clean instalation of windows too and start fresh. Just be careful about sites you go on and don't answer any pop-up messages or weird phone calls. This is definitely a scam.

FWIW, this is a world-wide, non-blind specific scam, that's been around for years already.
When a person phones me out of the blue, and, tells me microsoft has detected that I have a virus on my PC, and, then starts trying to ask me what they think will sound like technical questions, they start getting somewhat flustered when you start correcting them, and, asking them questions in return - these people are call-centre, question/answer list people who don't actually know much about what they're talking about, and, the couple of times this has happened to me, I enjoyed messing them around for a little while beffore just hanging up myself.
For example: Dear sir, what operating system are you running? Well, while my
primary OS is windows 7, I also have VMWare instances of windows
3.1 and, windows XP, as well as multiple versions of ubuntu linux
- which one are you talking about? Can you click on the start button for me? No, I am blind, and, don't use a mouse, so I don't physically click on anything. If you are able to bring up the run dialogue, please type in msconfig, and, hit enter? Why would I want to bring up the system configuration manager? Do you use ... software packages? Yes, but, I also work with multiple instances of development web-servers, along with the following programming interfaces...as well as the following additonal packages that I use for..., etc. etc....<smile>
Like said, at times it's amusing to reverse-scam, or double-talk idiots like this, but anyway - main thing is, like the other guys said, even Bill Gates himself is unlikely to phone you out of the blue, and, as long as you didn't install any of their software packages, or browser plugins, then chances are your PC is fine, but, if you're not sure, most PC techies could double-check for you since these guys generally just try to get you to install some or other trojan spyware/malware on your PC, but anyway.
Stay well
