Hi everyone, Sorry I was late in sharing this, had a personal emergency to take care of this afternoon (all fine). Here's the text of the announcement: NV Access is pleased to announce that version 2017.1 of NVDA, the free screen reader for Microsoft Windows, has now been released. Highlights of this release include reporting of sections and text columns in Microsoft Word; Support for reading, navigating and annotating books in Kindle for PC; and improved support for Microsoft Edge. This award-winning software has been changing the lives of thousands of blind and vision impaired people who can now independently use computers to produce written content, read news, socialise, shop and bank online, and, most importantly, actively participate in education and employment. Please consider helping NV Access to continue this important work by becoming a monthly donor. To download NVDA, please visit our Download page. To find out what’s new in this release, please read What’s new in NVDA 2017.1. Since I was late, I'll save you the trouble of going to that last link and post the What's new (just for 20171.1) here: 2017.1Highlights of this release include reporting of sections and text columns in Microsoft Word; Support for reading, navigating and annotating books in Kindle for PC; and improved support for Microsoft Edge. It seems a bit of a pointless exercise for a nother nvda release when just when the next major upgrade to windows 10 is just around the corner Why not wait till then?
I predict we will see another nvda release just after that

Hi Chris, We aim to release four major updates to NVDA each year - regardless of what Microsoft are up to. We are aware of the upcoming "creators update" to Windows 10. Much of what will be in that update is already trickling through in the regular "Windows insider" builds, which we receive and base many fixes and changes on. Several of the changes in NVDA 2017.1 relate directly to features which are due for release in the Creators Build of Windows 10. At this stage, we are confident that you should have as good an experience as we can bring you, even if you get the creators update for Windows 10 as soon as it comes out. I put some more info on our development lifecycle in last week's "In-Process" if you are interested, which you can find here: https://www.nvaccess.org/category/in-process/ Kind regards Quentin.

It is very great to have text columns reported in Microsoft Word!
I've missed it so much. On 2/22/2017 6:13 AM, Kwork wrote:

The thing is a number of people were still discussing issues on here and the dev list regarding master and the new update and its issues with loss of focus on wlm and explorer in very specific circumstances compared to the last reelease. I realise not everything can be fixed, but I was rather intrigued to find out about these issues as I have two windows 7 machines and have not been able to check out the second one as to if the machine is affected. I gather the devs cannot duplicate the effect and I cannot here on mine reliably either.

Does anyone know when the creators update will be appearing. Presumably we will be able to get a warning so we can back up and protect software that the anniversary update trashed before. Usually legacy programs we need to carry on using but Microsoft does not recognise as preferable, if that is a word. This is an old OCR I have and Outlook express with the modified display add on for 10.

Brian, It's always tricky working out when to put off releasing because of a bug. It's also not easy to try and document in terms of, if bug X, put off releasing while a fix is found, if bug Y, release and keep looking for a fix. We'll keep an eye on these couple of issues though and see what we can all work out about what's causing them and what we can do to fix it. Apologies for the problems! Regards Quentin.
