Wordpad ribbons
Gene
I'm not sure which list it was on but the subject
of ribbons came up in Wordpad yesterday. two people reported that they
couldn't get the ribbons to come up. there was speculation as to the cause
but now we know. On another list, the topic came up again tonight. A
list member reports that his ribbons working properly in Windows 7. He
then installed the four important updates Microsoft said should be installed and
now they no longer work. So much for the wonders of forced updates in
Windows 10. this was in Windows 7, as I said and we don't know if Windows
10 is affected. But all those who cannot defer updates may have this
problem. They can't be deferred in Windows 10 home.

Well, the ribbons show up in Wordpad under Creators Update. I tire of hearing the hue and cry about "forced" updates. Virtually every OS applies updates specified by the maker of said OS automatically, and now Windows does so. Yes, there's the occasional bad update. Under Windows 10 the system health telemetry has already shown its value in stopping problematic updates in their path and resulting in faster fixes. The Anniversary Update roll out was greatly extended because of unanticipated issues. Given the amount of different hardware that Windows, all versions of Windows, run on it's not possible for Microsoft to do comprehensive testing on all of it. This alone means that there are always going to be occasional issues regardless of how well tested it was before its release "into the wild." The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing in the right place but to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment. ~ Dorothy Nevill |

Hmm, for the record in 7 at least one can import the xp version of Wordpad with its ordinary ribbons.

It also seems to get around the apparent random format choices in save that the newer version seems to exhibit, at least for myself. Thinks.. I wonder if this is in any way related to the some menues dont work after running some software, issue I meantioned yesterday? Brian bglists@... Sent via blueyonder. Granted, but I do sometimes fell that the way its done out of sight means that if you are working and it does screw things up, you have little or no warning.

I've seen three reports now cumulatively on
different lists that Windows 10 users aren't affected by the Wordpad
problem. One or two users have Windows 7 and Windows 10 computers and they
have the problem on their Windows 7 machines after updating and not on their
Windows 10 machines updating. So Windows 10 users don't need to
worry.

In this case, I was talking about security and
stability updates issued monthly. I doubt those are tested in the insider
program. Microsoft does, from time to time, release a bat patch.

Now you see why we need to have updates announced when you
check for updates so you can defer them until there is a fix for
them and some on this list don't think so. Some of us care what
is being downloaded in toour computers. I still want what little
control I still have. Brian Sackrider On 4/18/2017 11:36 PM, Gene wrote:

Wooo, testing it, wordpad is totally unusable for me in Windows 7. I can't open ribbons, I can't move between buttons in save dialog, I can't locate the ribbon with object navigation (I can locate these using flat navigation but is not activated) etc... horrible.

I always had my systems set to download updates but to let me choose when to install them. I don't care very much with regard to updates that don't require a restart, but for the ones the will it would be nice to have a really obvious warning that one is waiting, and you don't get that anymore. My machine did a restart overnight to apply updates regarding which I had not noticed anything come up in the notification center. There have been other times when, by chance, I have and could choose to either restart now or just let the Windows Update process do that for me during non-active hours. What I find interesting is how readily some want to assign any malfunction on their computers to "a bad update." It's not that these have never occurred, but when a true bad update goes out the effects are generally not isolated, but broad. Updates can, and sometimes do, reveal a vulnerability that was idiosyncratic to one's own machine due to something that came (or didn't come) before rather than the update itself. During the old Windows Update era I had a lot of calls over the years that were for problems that I solved by applying Windows Updates that the user had not applied, sometimes by intent and sometimes through malfunction of Windows Update that they hadn't noticed. My own experience in doing technical support for a long time now strongly suggests to me that there were many more issues that were the direct result of refusing updates selectively and, over time, that creating a house of cards that finally came crashing down. So you do need usb devices to get them working. Hopefully you can find the latest versions. On 20/04/2017 1:20 a.m., brian wrote:

Having updates announced as you wish may have
nothing to do with deferring them. For one thing, you can't defer updates
in Windows 10 home. For another, in versions of Windows 10 where you can
defer them for a time, there must be a way to do so since the user has that
ability.
And, as has already been stated,
sighted people don't get such notifications.
