hot key assignments

Do you mean that you can add and remove new
versions of commands in NVDA? I don't see the relevance to my
comments. I'm saying that if you change a command, you may impair the
logic of the interface and you may cause the inconvenience of having caused a
command not to work properly.

Gene's advice (below) is great advice!

It's my experience that the learning curve for NVDA is not bad at all and that small effort in the beginning pays off long-term. -LM --------------------------------------------

Trying to make one screen-reader into a copy of another may create inconveniences and annoying problems you won't know about until you start using the new commands. that may cause you inconveniences you don't realize until you start changing commands. And it may impair the logic of the interface. Why not use the screen-reader as it is for a week or two? Then you'll have a much better idea if you want to change commands. Gene Gene

One of the disadvantages in the Window-eyes
interface is the number of program commands that are interfered with by
Window-eyes and for which the bypass command needs to be used. In this
case, changing the find command would mean that you can't conveniently forward a
message if you read mail as html. You can use the bypass command but that
is not as convenient. But far more serious is that you will remove the
ability to do a backward search. I believe the old commands will still
work but where is the logic? In NVDA, forward search is control NVDA key
f. Backwards search is control shift NVDA key f. Find next is NVDA
key f3. Backward find previous is control shift NVDA key f3. So the
new command is completely outside of the logic of the cluster of commands.
You may be surprised how quickly you may get used
to the new commands. It may be far more quickly than you think now.
Trying to make one screen-reader into a copy of another may create
inconveniences and annoying problems you won't know about until you start using
the new commands. that may cause you inconveniences you don't realize
until you start changing commands. And it may impair the logic of the
interface. Why not use the screen-reader as it is for a week or two?
Then you'll have a much better idea if you want to change commands.

Regarding changing hotkeys, the "input gestures" dialog will let you set

custom gestures. Press NVDA+n for the NVDA menu (where the NVDA key will either be INSERT or CAPS LOCK) then press P for preferences then N for input gestures (or arrow through the list and press ENTER on it). In the dialog, you can filter to "search" for a command, then TAB to the list of commands (it's a tree view, sorted by command type) - use the left and right arrow keys to expand or collapse the tree branches. When you are on the command you want to add a new command to, press alt+a then press the key command and ENTER . Then press ENTER again to save your changes.

You'll actually find it in the browse mode category in Input Gestures.

Folks, let us never forget that input gestures dialog is context-sensitive. To Don: find command will show up if you're in a place where you can find text, such as in web browsers. After opening say, a web browser, open input gestures dialog. Cheers, Joseph
