rolling back to NVDA 2017.1

Josh Kennedy

I have two questions. Could I have the link for nvda 2017.1? the web is a lot slower with 2017.2 and even the next snapshots its slower. Or should I just stay on the next snapshots and maybe my issue will clear up in a few days? and my other questin is if I roll back to 2017.1 should I completely uninstall the next snapshot and delete all related folders? or should i install 2017.1 overtop the snapshot?

Hi,
I plan to investigate reports of general slowness in hopes of finding out what's up.
Cheers,
Joseph

Hi,
The slowness has been ongoing since the 2017 version. It comes and go. When I start my Outlook 2013, there is a definite silence for close to a minute then its starts reading. The moment I begin scrolling rapidly with the down arrow, the voice gets stuck and I have to play with it to get it going. The same happens with Firefox, worse I-e11, Edge. It is less obvious with Google Chrome. I have reported this various times. I am glad this will be thoroughly investigated as it is very frustrating and even risky when you are in the middle of a brokerage transaction or a bank transfer.
Many thanks
Blessings

So that's why Firefox has been slower this past week for me while
navigating. I thought it might be Firefox updates, but am now wondering if
it is NVDA. I unfortunately don't have the 2017.1 installer, so can't check
this out.

Officially, nvda moans when you downdate in these ways, but if you want to you can firstly make a portable version from the current installed version and preserve settings, then completely uninstall the installed version, install a clean version of the older one and you will still have a record of the old settings in the portable version so you can set things up the same as before.

I have to say, using Firefox I've noticed no slow down, indeed the opposite, tthough maybe its hardware or browser related in some way.
I use Master branch and can usualy spot dodgyness well before a new release comes out though I have to say github over complicates reporting issues. The old system was far more intuitive and less hassle overall.

This has to be a Windows 10 issue then, as in 7 the code seems to me to be actually faster in Firefox.

It would be revealing if those who notice slow downs in nvda would tell us what version of Windows and if 10, which actual version it is.
I am beginning to suspect its only Windows 10, as testing the code out on 7 and even, shock horror, XP it seems pretty snappy in fiirfox
the xp machines can only run 52 and 48 of the browser due to harrdware and software constraints.

However they work well.

Somethin is going on with the preview versions and transitions between Edge and Mail, for example.

Sometimes UI activities result in 20 seconds of silence and then normal activiey afterwards.

I am running last preview and last next of NVDA. This has been noticed for about 2 plus weeks.

In the last month and before I updated to the latest stable NVDA
release I started having slowness showing up. Before that point I
hadn't experienced it. It started happening when I was using Firefox
and going through my messages on Gmail.com. If I opened up a message
in a separate window, did my thing with that message and then closed
the window it would seem to freeze my computer. NVDA became
unresponsive but sometimes I was able to alt tab back and forth and
either it woke up or I was able to close Firefox which was reported as
not responding. If I had to close Firefox I was then able to start
Firefox again and reopen all the windows and be back where I had been.
However other times I was unable to do that and had to restart the
computer as it didn't appear that it would resolve itself and NVDA
refused to respond. I then switched to Chrome and thought everything
was fine until it started happening with Chrome as well. At first it
didn't seem to occur as often as it did with Firefox but now it's
happening almost as much as it did on Firefox.

I'm using Windows 10 Version 1607 (OS Build 14393.1198) on a 32bit
computer and had been using the latest version of Firefox and now use
the latest version of Chrome to read my email on gmail.com.

So to reiterate whenever I open a separate window or tab and then
close it NVDA seems to go to lunch and I have to alt tab back and
forth a few times until I get some feedback from NVDA at which point
it either starts working again or I have to close whatever internet
browser and failing that restart the computer.

The slowdown I noticed that made me roll back to 2017.1 is happening on Windows 7. The processes I notice the slowdown on are ones that have progress bars on the screen. One does a file scan of files across quite a few folders, and the other is loading audio files and converting them to different formats. Under NVDA 2017.2 it takes several times longer for these processes to run than it does with NVDA 2017.1 running. I tried turning progress bar updates completely off, but this didn't help. I didn't notice any other slowness on my systems using 2017.2, only when there were progress bars involved.

I have two questions. Could I have the link for nvda 2017.1? the web is a
lot slower with 2017.2 and even the next snapshots its slower. Or should I
just stay on the next snapshots and maybe my issue will clear up in a few
days? and my other questin is if I roll back to 2017.1 should I completely
uninstall the next snapshot and delete all related folders? or should i
install 2017.1 overtop the snapshot?

Hi everyone,

It appears a code responsible for handling transparent text when looking at the screen may have contributed to this problem, or perhaps there's some code entered into NVDA master around March 2017 that might be causing issues for those affected. I have raised an issue at:
https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/7251

Cheers,

The slowdown I noticed that made me roll back to 2017.1 is happening on Windows 7. The processes I notice the slowdown on are ones that have progress bars on the screen. One does a file scan of files across quite a few folders, and the other is loading audio files and converting them to different formats. Under NVDA 2017.2 it takes several times longer for these processes to run than it does with NVDA 2017.1 running. I tried turning progress bar updates completely off, but this didn't help.
I didn't notice any other slowness on my systems using 2017.2, only when there were progress bars involved.

Hi,
The slowness has been ongoing since the 2017 version. It comes and go.
When I start my Outlook 2013, there is a definite silence for close
to a minute then its starts reading. The moment I begin scrolling
rapidly with the down arrow, the voice gets stuck and I have to play
with it to get it going. The same happens with Firefox, worse
I-e11, Edge. It is less obvious with Google Chrome. I have
reported this various times. I am glad

this will be thoroughly investigated as it is very frustrating and
even risky when you are in the middle of a brokerage transaction or
a bank transfer.
Many thanks

Brian's Mail list account

I'm using the latest master, but just tried the official release on windows 7 64bit and although if the caching puts a progress up on, say explorer, its only a very small glitch in the scrolling that is all.

No problems on Firefox thus far, except where we all know pages are rather busy with javascript for vanity reasons for the page authors I'd imagine.

hi brian and joseph.
i downloaded nvda 2017.2
even sometimes when i started my computer and pressed start button to
bring the menus, nvda became unresponsive and silent.
sometimes, using TaskManager and ending processing of nvda and its
shortcut to start nvda or sometimes, nvda's shortcut for starting it,
was helpful for me.
but sometimes i needded to use power button to turn of my system!
i use windows xp, with twoGb of ram and cpu two cores.
in most cases, also i could not use firefox easily and i should press
alt+tab many tabs many tabs or close firefox or end process of nvda
and restart it to work.
so i completely uninstalled 2017.2 and returned to 2017.1
its extremely fast and completely responsive without any hang or crash.
i am completely satisfied with nvda 2017.1 and i dont have any problem
which i mentioned in this list or in the github with firefox using
this version of nvda.
nvda 2017.1 is the best version for me.

The slowdown I noticed that made me roll back to 2017.1 is happening on
Windows 7. The processes I notice the slowdown on are ones that have
progress bars on the screen. One does a file scan of files across quite a
few folders, and the other is loading audio files and converting them to
different formats. Under NVDA 2017.2 it takes several times longer for these

processes to run than it does with NVDA 2017.1 running. I tried turning
progress bar updates completely off, but this didn't help.
I didn't notice any other slowness on my systems using 2017.2, only when
there were progress bars involved.

It would be revealing if those who notice slow downs in nvda would
tell us what version of Windows and if 10, which actual version it is.
I am beginning to suspect its only Windows 10, as testing the code out
on 7 and even, shock horror, XP it seems pretty snappy in fiirfox the
xp machines can only run 52 and 48 of the browser due to harrdware and
software constraints.

However they work well.

My feeling is a big arrow pointing to Microsofts UIA code.

So that's why Firefox has been slower this past week for me while

this out.

Hi,
The slowness has been ongoing since the 2017 version.

Many thanks
Blessings
Pascal

Hi,
I plan to investigate reports of general slowness in hopes of
finding out what's up.
Cheers,

I have two questions. Could I have the link for nvda 2017.1? the web
is a lot slower with 2017.2 and even the next snapshots its slower.
Or should I just stay on the next snapshots and maybe my issue will
clear up in a few days? and my other questin is if I roll back to
2017.1 should I completely uninstall the next snapshot and delete
all related folders? or should i install 2017.1 overtop the
snapshot?
