NVDA Chokes Up When Arrowing Down
Rich De Steno <ironrock@...>
I noticed that in the current version of NVDA, it now chokes up when I arrow down on a web page or a list of emails, for example. By that, I mean that it will actually go silent for a few seconds as I arrow down, as if it was trying to catch up with the flowing input. I never experienced this in prior versions. It used to be snappy and quick with the flow.

Well, I blush a little since this is most likely one of those "me too" messages but judging by the number of messages, this is an issue of some concern and I know, by using the products, that the developers are looking for a cure.

I have noticed a lack of response both on firefox and Internet explorer. The lack of speech usually occurs about the middle of a web page, especially when tabbing and arrowing around for examination purposes. BTW, I have everything most recent including all windows and NVDA updates which are available to us mainstream folks, and I am running the most recent versions of Explorer and Firefox. It still is here, but a problem seems to have been identified with a particular routine that can affect some machines and not others. Could this be due to absolute pixal addressing ofsome kind or something similar?

Hi Brian,
I have reported this choking problem a while ago. I have an Intel processor and using the latest Win10 and latest NVDA version. It chokes when arrowing down in Outlooks 2013, and Firefox. It does the same when I hit the Ctrl key to silence the voice. Some times I have to hit the Ctrl key several times to shut it off. I also experience many delays when entering Outlook and in Firefox when entering my home page which is Yahoo.com/finance. The choking and prolonged silence are less noticeable when using Chrome. I have given up on using IE 11 as the choking and silences are so bad making the browser useless. Its most peculiar. I've had none of this here at all, so there has to be more to it than just nvda. Sonds like software or maybe hardware or a driver playing a part.

I can recall many years ago, Dolphin had a very similar problem and they eventually traced it to an updated graphics driver, reverting to the old one fixed it. They seem to fix one thing in Chrome and break others. I suspect when they test they do not actually use nvda.

The only way i can sort of get a bit of choking is to delete all the search cache using ccleaner then very quickly attempt to get details of files in explorer in a big folder. The choking heere is the reindexing and the beeping of the progress bar. In facrt it makes the espeak break up but does not really slow things by very much, but it is an effect you can hear.

Well one strength of nvda is also its weakness.

Nvda focuses on using internal os libraries and standards to function. There are no third party dlls, or drivers or intercepts or any number of crappy middlemen and thats why nvda is good. At the same time if any of those libraries have bugs or other things do not work with them or they fail, nvda becomes useless. If jaws and other comercial products have anything to go for them, their major use of these layers protect them from a lot of issues with broken things. And for the most part this works. However performance is lower or can be and you may have to enter special modes to get things to work right. In nvda's case, most of what it uses is allready there. But if it isn't there and it doesn't have it in itself or a module then there can be trouble. One thing I can say though is that unless it really can't make sence of something it won't crash, and if it can't it probably just won't do whatever you want and go beep can't do this. I have found that your average layered screen reader can do a little more than nvda but give it something to hard for it, and it will try to do it anyway, even though it may not b be able to handle it. It will then crash, and depending on several factors either take itself, its settings or bits of your system with it. I have had some access software that did this. The system would crash because of something I couldn't do well it couldn't do, and it would go down, and take bits of windows with it. Windows wouldn't start and I would have to reformat to make windows start. I remember an old supernova sr which did this after testing some maps. Some stuff wouldn't work bits of things kept going, the system didn't start or run right. At first I thought the system had gone nuts but after reformatting the system about 10 times I found a pattern. I eventually tracked down the map and reported it. The issue was fixed but that was the end of my testing. And the intercepts before the direct, chain, mirror drivers and later on uia intercepts, well they were unstable. There were hacks to load 2 readers and that was fun, uninstall them wrong or run them both together and you lost the system. On 13/06/2017 8:19 p.m., Brian's Mail list account wrote:
