how do I download messages from the imap server?

Thanks.

Brian's Mail list account

Depends on the email client. Most work automatically though. You set up the account as told to, then when you go to the account it should ask if you want to download folders, then when you open a folder it normally downloads headers and the whole file when you go into that message. Some clients can be set up so they download it all when you go there or you can ask it to download all messages in all folders. You can also often hide folders you are not interested in.
Some clients retain messages while others seem to keep them only for that session.
Also of cours you cannot normally use message rules on Imap servers as the sorting is done at the source. You can often make other folders and use them manually to stare messages on the server but this depends on where the email server is Google seem to do their own thing in this regard while others are more traditional.
At least, normally you can get access to the spam folder on Imap which you do not get on a pop3 server.

Some programs, Thunderbird and Outlook, will apply message rules to IMAP accounts.  others, Windows Live Mail, and the old Outlook Express, won't.

Did you use IMAP or POP3 before?  I much prefer POP3 if synchronization isn't desired among devices.

Hi, Tony,

I lost the sound in outlook so I'm using the gmail site to write this

think what happened was when I set up message rules, the sound went

I'll say it again, it's best to set up message filtering for IMAP on your IMAP server side, regardless of the provider.  It's a part of the protocol and it's on the server side so that the filtering you do and the folders you create are automatically propagated across all devices you might ever use to access your e-mail.  It saves you having to do this work again when you get a new computer, for instance, because it's all done on the server side.

For Gmail I wrote the following instructions a while back:  Creating IMAP Labels (Folders) and Filters for Gmail

Hi Rosemarie,

It helps Absolutely! I've been doing some checking, and I believe this
will work. Go to the system tray and from there arrow over to the
speakers button. Once there press the context menu button and arrow
down to the sounds option and press enter on that.

If you've ever been in the sound schemes tree view, you will recognize
it. From here, you can tab over to the list of sound events to see if
the mil notification sound is active or not. if it's not, you can assign
the windows default sound to play, or browse for the sound of your
choice. If the default sound is there, you can test it to see if it
works, and if so, apply it. If it doesn't function properly, try to
reassign it. If that doesn't work, test out a sound of your choice. If
you have a sound library of custom sounds, use one of those. Hopefully
this helps. I'm going to be on the road for the holiday, but I will
check in later to see how things are going.

Google is a bit of an odd ball though. I've not the foggiest how, for example one might do the same on bt or virgi webmail to get imap to work how you want it to. I can recall that simply copying stuff to the spam folder on google would in effect make sure all stuff like that went to spam.

Hi Rosemarie,

Sorry I haven't gotten back sooner. I was suppose to get back to you
last Friday night; however, I got stopped in my tracks by a nasty bout
of tonsillitis. I think I'm on the end of it now. I use Mozilla
Thunderbird as a substitute email client for whenever outlook goes on
the fritz. It holds its end of the bargain pretty well. Have you tried
that one? There's also an email program in the Mozilla sea monkey
internet suite, and I think there's a program out there call P M mail.
I've never used the latter. Hope this helps, and my apologies again for
not getting back sooner.

Hi, Tony,

Outlook just isn't working for me. I tried what you suggested and it
didn't work. I'm using windows live mail to write this message. I
think I'm gonna ditch outlook and stay with windows live as long as I
can. Can you recommend another program if windows live doesn't work
anymore?

Thanks.

Hi Rosemarie,

Oh dear. Let's see if we can figure things out and get them back to
being peachy. What operating system are you using? I have to know this
before I devise a plan of attack. I have windows 10 running on both my
systems just to be fair. Kind of like that game you show me yours, I'll
show you mine

Hi, Tony,

I lost the sound in outlook so I'm using the gmail site to write this
message. I don't know how to get the mail notification sound back. I
think what happened was when I set up message rules, the sound went
away so now I have everything going to the inbox.

Hi Rosemarie,

Which email client are you working in. Don't want to give you the
wrong
advice here.
