Hi and welcome Yes it can be done. Press Nvda+n to open the nvda menu, then press p to open preferences followed by p again to open the Punctuation and Symbol Pronunciation dialog. Note bang appears twice in the list, as a sentence ending and as a symbol. Tick appears twice as well, as left tick and right tick. Down arrow and When you get to an entry you want to change, press tab once to enter the replacement field and enter the word you would like to be spoken instead. Tab to the OK button and press enter. Repeat for all changes
Cheers Chris

Yes it can. Go to punctuation in the preferences. In there you can change what any say, and eye they say it.

You should use the default dictionary because if you use the voice
dictionary, if you should switch voices, it will go back to the way it was. I
don’t know why they say tick and bang either.
I think it's done in the speech dictionary.

I don't mind hearing tick and bang either. I'd rather hear tick and bang than words with four syllables for more efficient reading. That's just my own personal preference.

No its not the dictionary. Its definitely the punctuation and symbols settings you want.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
The problem with some symbols is that they can be said differently in different countries. also some like a very short word, but for me a real word is better, after all you can easily stop it by typing. ! exclamation is bang in Australia and some other countries. # is hash, hatch or number depending on where you are in the world. I have also changed _ to underscore, and many many others as well. It suits me, but may not suit others. Also I've put > and < into the low priority class as otherwise on text messages these characters tend to be used to show the quoted lines but hearing greater than in the middle of sentences does get wearing! Note though that come characters appear more than once for a reason as they depend on their position for context. Brian bglists@... Sent via blueyonder. Hello Brian,
Can you explain how you changed those pronounciations? I just went in to the symbols pronounciation, changed bang to exclaimation saved, even restarted NVDA, nothing changed. Can you export your symbols and import them elsewhere? Thanks. Dave. There are two exclamation marks. One that NVDA determines ends a
