Google Drive new version mystery

Brian's Mail list account

Just in case this affects others, I've just installed an update for google drive and its now changed its name to google backup and store, but it has also seemingly gathered someone bugs. Firstly, it randomly seems to ask you to log in to its account again, or it may suddenly crash out and present the usual messages about looking on line for a solution etc, or it decides if another window is open for a piece of software to bring up what appears to be an invisible window over the desk top when said application is closed, needing you to bring up the desktop again.
The tray icon reflects the new name and tells you how long from the last sync it was. Presumably this monitors the state all the time in case somebody else adds a file.
Seems pretty clunky and I see not real reason why it has been altered other than to do the usual Google thing of change for changes sake and to create new bugs.
grin.

Backup and Sync from Google has stopped working

Argh...
You seemingly cannot put the old one back in as the loader has just been a stub for some time now.
This is windows 7.

Well I just uninstalled it and had to do a massive clean out of broken active x and start up entries for windows in windows 7 as it kept trying to reinstall it after the uninstall and even when I thought it had gone I could not remove its folder till I used autorun to remove the extra crap.

What a bloomin mess. Somebody needs to do more testing.
So how can I reinstall the old version without it keeping on saying I'm running an old version and wanting to update it all the time. I only want to swap files from one folder. the new version even if the dialogue text was accessible which its not and even if it did not pop up at every start up which it does and even if it actually worked when you clicked the tray icon instead of falling over, which it won't, its overkill.

Hello,
the reason for this update is that it has now become a full-featured backup solution which can backup and sync folders from the computer, not just within the Google Drive directory tree.
Once the dust settles this will be a good thing actually.
Kind regards,
Felix

Hello all,
The concept seems great, but unfortunately this app is totally not accessible, at least in my case. I couldn't even install it to the end, since all dialogues weren't read by any of my two screenreaders. And when I think that only two months ago I bought a one-year subscription to Google Drive. How disappointing! I'll now have to look for another backup solution.

Vlad.

Oh that sucks! They change it on you. You pay good money to use that app. Now you can't use it! What a rip!

If it is not accessible now, that doesn't mean it won't be.  Others may be able to tell you how to get information on whether and how long it may be before accessibility is introduced.  You can probably have your money returned, if desired assuming accessibility will take long enough for the app not to be of value to a blind user for more than just a short time from now.

As always, accessibility comes last, if it does. All I can do i wait, maybe in a few weeks there'll be a new version.

I get that problem as well. So far three machines downdated, two more to go. Buth playing silly wotsits at present with old version won't run messages. Need to do a massive purge to stop it seeing newer versions inside machine, obviously.

Hello. I didn't update to the latest version of Google Drive. I'm thinking to do, but I want to know if an accessibility issue that I have has been fixed. In Google Drive for Windows, I can't accept an invitation at a folder. Even if this action must be made via web, I can't find the button for it. So, was it fixed?
Cheers,
Florian

Well I tried to install old google drive and old google drive may exist but its all that way now.

I have this new drive photo sync on my aunt's new system so she could use it, are you saying I should get rid of it.

If you read further down the thread I weeded out lots of things from start up using autorun and then deleted all stuff pertaining to it after a reboot. This allowed the msi version of the previous version, around 33 meg in size, to install without seeing an updater file, so it then let me log in and its been working since, since there is noupdater for it to update with.
Obviously, I have no idea how long Google will support the old system, but I imagine the actual method of working is the same on the new one its just allowed to back up any folder you want in the backup and store version.
Shame its obviously broken and crashes a lot. Might have another look in a few months to see if they have fixed it.

Hello,

The new client is not accessible, both with Jaws and NVDA. I've been battling with Google Support for almost one month, sending emails back and forth, I've got only promises. They are starting to believe that I am the problem, not their client. If any of you could contact them as well, that would be great. Maybe if we put our efforts together, they will do something about this.

I know it's time consuming, but let's try, who knows!
