voice pitch not changing when capitalizing a letter

Dan Thompson

Hi all,

I am trying to get a student’s NVD to change pitch when she types a capital letter.  I have set the pitch change all the way up to 100 and still there is no change.  Of course I really don’t want the change  at 100.  I just kept trying different pitches.  I have tried the pitch change with Neo speech kate, and Paul, eloquence

And the default Easy speak.

None make the pitch change when capitalizing.  Can some one help?

Thanks in advance.

Don H

Try the access32 syn.  The pitch change works with it.

but the pitch change should work with at least some of the synthesizers mentioned.  If you can't get it to work, beep when a capital letter is typed may be a good option.  I haven't played with it but it may be the best compromise.  I doubt you want cap spoken as the other option does.

I found the same thing.  I've filed a bug on our system (https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/7514 for anyone interested).

In the meantime, the workarounds I found were:

- It seems to affect Microsoft OneCore and SAPI 5 voices.  eSpeak at least seems to work fine for me.  I'm not sure about other synthesizers.  I just re-read your message though and you said eSpeak isn't working for you.

- In the Voice settings dialog - press NVDA+control+v, I found that if you set "Say cap before capitals", then it reads "cap" before any capital, but it also adjusts the pitch as per the pitch change setting above that.
- Also in the Voice settings dialog, there is a "beep for capitals" option which does what it claims (although it doesn't "fix" the pitch).

Regards

Quentin.

Thank you very much Quentin. I will turn on “say caps.”

I don't know if other NVDA users have had different mileage to me, but I have the beep for caps option on, and it only beeps if I'm navigating letter by letter. The minute I go word by word or reading continuously, there are no beeps for capitals.

The same is true with the Say Cap before capitals option. I use the Microsoft Zera voice and normally only using the default pitch change of 30 for caps, but when I increased it to 100 for testing purposes just now, it is very evident in the pitch change ... again, however, this effect is only noticed when going letter by letter and, I discover, only when the Say Cap before Capitals option is checked.

I'd quite like to hear that capital pitch change when reading a document from top to bottom, such as a page of a newspaper, but it's of little use if you only get it navigating character by character and, for me, without the Say Cap before Capitals setting needing to be active. Is that something that lies in the hands of the voice maker, or could NVDA be tweeked to extend this?

NVDA doesn't indicate capital letters when reading by word, line or anything other than spelling or moving by character. The beep only occurs when typing characters or reading with left and right arrow.

The pitch change does occur, but it can be hard to distinguish. I'd recommend setting it to about 50% or -50%. The reason that is clearer when say cap before capital is checked is because the voice processes more speech, thus the pitch change can occur in the middle of speech.

I wouldn't say it's of no use. In fact, it is good for proofreading purposes, which is the main reason why something like this is incorporated. Why would a basic user turn on beeps for capitals to hear it in Say all? I doubt adding a function like this would make it to NVDA core.

But when proofreading a document, someone might want capitals indicated in some way when using say all or when reading by line.  Especially since, in my experience, the shift doesn't always work even when pushed correctly.  On at least three computers, with different keyboards, I've noticed things not capitalized when looking over something I've written and there is no question that I've pushed the shift key with plenty of force while typing.  All modes, say cap, pitch change, and beep should be able to be turned on however reading is being done.  A lot of users might not want to use this feature and it might be better to have it in a general setting that causes other things to be announced such as attributes while reading in all ways as well.  This setting might be called something like proofreading and you could indicate when working with parameters for that setting in a dialog what you want on and off.  But some provision should be made for hearing such things during extended reading and reading by line.

I agree that it's when I'm proof reading that I find the beep for capitals helpful. I have a configuration profile for editing documents before I submit them anywhere, in which I have the punctuation level set to all, and slow the speed down a little, and it would be helpful to have the beep for a capital sounding as I move through the document line by line, rather than having to navigate to the specific place where there should be a capital letter so I can hear the beep as I move by character.

I don't believe the change in pitch for capitals is audible at all unless the Say Cap for Capitals seting is on. Even with it set to 100, I don't hear any change in pitch with Microsoft Zira voice without that audible Cap announcement and, for me, that's more of a distraction than it's worth when I'm editing.

Hi,

I think this is a legitimate enhancement request, so I’m going to check to see if there is an issue on the GitHub site that addresses it, and if not, put it out there.

Thanks.

Hi,

I subscribed to this list in the middle of this conversation, so please forgive me for asking this.

Can the person who had the problem please give me steps to reproduce? For instance, I may be using a different synthesizer or voice or program or keyboard or whatever, and I won’t be able to produce the issue. The more specific, the easier it is going to be to enter the bug and get a fix.

Thanks.

Hi Jim,

NVDA has a voice settings option called "capital pitch change percentage".  The idea being that as you are typing or reading letter by letter, capital letters are read in a higher (or lower) pitch to distinguish them.  There are several other options for distinguishing capitals, being to beep or to read "cap", all of which can be set independently of each other.

The issue is that when using either OneCore or SAPI voices, the capital pitch change option is ignored UNLESS say cap is also checked - and then it does both.

Using eSpeak, the options all work as they should (capitals are indicated by pitch change even without say cap checked).  I'm not sure about other synthesizers.

eSpeak is the default synthesizer that comes with NVDA.  If you go into the synthesizer dialog - NVDA+control+s, you can change to other synthesizers you have on your system.  Microsoft Speech API Version 5 (and on XP Microsoft Speech API Version 4) are different to eSpeak.

I'm glad the conversation found you a useful setting in any case!

quentin, i also installed sapi5 version of espeak, beside espeak which
is used in nvda and pitch change works for me with bad quality of
capital letters.

Hi Jim,

NVDA has a voice settings option called "capital pitch change
percentage".
The idea being that as you are typing or reading letter by letter,
capital
letters are read in a higher (or lower) pitch to distinguish them.
There
are several other options for distinguishing capitals, being to beep or
to
read "cap", all of which can be set independently of each other.

The issue is that when using either OneCore or SAPI voices, the capital
pitch change option is ignored UNLESS say cap is also checked - and
then
it
does both.

Using eSpeak, the options all work as they should (capitals are
indicated
by pitch change even without say cap checked). I'm not sure about
other
synthesizers.

The issue I filed is: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/7514

If change in pitch isn't audible unless some other indication is on,
that
is a bug and evidently is now being looked into.

I agree that it's when I'm proof reading that I find the beep for
capitals
helpful. I have a configuration profile for editing documents before I
submit them anywhere, in which I have the punctuation level set to
all,
and
slow the speed down a little, and it would be helpful to have the beep
for
a capital sounding as I move through the document line by line, rather
than
having to navigate to the specific place where there should be a
capital
letter so I can hear the beep as I move by character.

I don't believe the change in pitch for capitals is audible at all
unless
the Say Cap for Capitals seting is on. Even with it set to 100, I
don't
hear any change in pitch with Microsoft Zira voice without that
audible
Cap
announcement and, for me, that's more of a distraction than it's worth
when
I'm editing.

Oh OK, I must admit I hadn't looked too much into what other versions of eSpeak where available to download, I apologise!  Interesting, maybe it is something which either doesn't affect XP, or only affects certain SAPI voices.
