The Newly Released OCR Feature.
George Zaynoun
Hi,
I have a couple of questions about the new OCR feature. Can we scan from paper with a compatible scanner or do we make OCR on the screen and above all what is the command to issue to invoke OCR Scan? Thanks. -- Georges Zeinoun Timmerv. 6A ITR LGH1102, 54163 SKÖVDE SWEDEN Tel: +46 (500) 48 29 29 +46 (500) 43 55 11 |

Hi George, The way NVDA uses the OCR is the same as the original add-on. It only reads the screen, so you'll need something else to scan directly (having said that, you could scan an image from your scanner and use NVDA to read the results - not quite a one step process, but potentially useful for scanners which only come with an image scanning program?) To use the NVDA feature, locate a graphic (on a web page, an inaccessible PDF, etc), and press NVDA+r. Where it differs from the addon is that the addon uses the review cursor, the Windows 10 feature uses the regular navigation keys (eg the arrows to move around the scanned text. The OCR itself is a feature built into Windows 10, so it's possible there are other programs at there which can scan directly, I must admit I haven't looked into it. Regards Quentin. This is exactly how the old Office tools used to work. You had a camera or scanner to make the picture, which loaded into a viewing utility in office. There was an option ofn the menu of that display program to export recognised text to word etc, and you did that and then could read it. The way the ocr add on works, ie the old one is more intended for interacting with actual running programs, but most people use OCR to make a picture of text into text do they not?

The NVDA extra function is meant to allow easier use of the inbuilt ocr, and that is made by Microsoft, though is very probably a well known engine licenced to them. It was that way in Office.
