Hello All:
I can't believe the level of "whining" that is going on in regards to NVDA dropping support for older versions of Windows!
Can't you people understand that it has become a great security risk to keep on supporting versions of Windows which Microsoft themselves will no longer support and recommend that users of older versions to upgrade!
You are not only doing harm to your own PC's. But! Every time you get online with unsecure Windows you are also spreading whatever viruses are in your PC's throughout the internet!
If you are unable to upgrade for monetary reasons? There are many ways to buy legal license keys for Windows 7/e/8.1/10.
If you need to upgrade to a new PC? There are several organizations that sells refurbished PC's for the blind. As well as for poor people in general!
Here in the U.S. GoodWill, The Salvation Army and Computers for the Blind sell good computers with Windows 7 installed. I believe the same applies for the U.K., Asia and other far away land.
If your idea for not upgrading is that you don't want to give your money to Microsoft? Then turn off your PC and hide under your bed and hope and pray that Microsoft does not go into the furniture business!
It's all a matter of being a well informed blind person!
You need to get out there and find out all you can so you will be able to make an well informed decision about which PC is right for you!
Don't be spreading your viruses by using unsecure PC's just because you are afraid of learning the new technology!!!
I will now get ready by putting on my fire resistant suit as I begin to read all your flaming posts/replies!
Have lots of fun at my expense!!!

Hi!
As far as I can tell Windows 10 will be the last version as far as the naming is concerned.
It will be Windows 10 with fancy names like Creators Update and the upcoming Fall Creators update.
Hope I've been able to help you out!

it won't be called windows any more though. they will probably have some new buzz word. Since they seem to be obsessed with bits of buildings, IE apartments and bungalows etc all of which have windows, perhaps since everything is going to be in the Cloud soon, we need types of wither next time?
How about Microsofts new microclimat system? :-) I'm sure there are many more versions of 10 to come though. I would however like to suggest they do not call this next update Fall. Hi, Carlos,
Wow, I couldn't have said it any better! Maybe these people who refuse to change need to go hide in a cave somewhere. My very first computer was from Computers for the Blind in Texas. I got that in 2003. It was a windows 98 computer. Two years later I upgraded to XP with the help of one of my nephews. He actually had the computer custom-built for me. I had that one until 2011 when I upgraded to windows 7. Just last year I bought this computer with windows 10 already installed on it. Yes, there are many ways to get a new or refurvished computer if you really want one bad enough. I'll go ya one better. I wasn't too lazy to go out and look for sales. Like the old saying goes, where there's a will, there's a way. I'll get off of my soap box now.

Brian's Mail list account
I think how you view this depends very much on your circumstances and availability and affordability of new gear. Hear in the UK we may often bemoan the cuts to benefits etc and say we are poor, but we are rich compared to some parts of the world, and that is why some still use XP. I don't think, in a perfect world that NV Access would want to make things harder for those in the most need, but one has to cut ones cloth according to your needs, and in this case being as the latest nvda is now very capable indeed and XP is old and slow and has fewer programs whose latest versions work on it. The writing on the wall has eventually to be read and understood. after all it does not mean that anyone is going to take away your working copy, or indeed that you cannot ask here if there are issues you need to have resolved, as hopefully enough xp users are here to help out.
Its just that you cannot do everything, can you? I hope I've covered all sides here. I think really it is probably precisely because nobody wanted to drop xp that the sudden drop has occurred. If it had been planned it could have been done with less issues to those running snapshots on XP, but even I have managed to recover things from the mess, so it turned out just to be a corrupted update of some kind. It is a salutary warning to us all though that its a very good idea to make a portable copy of nvda complete with the set up and add ons you use, so you can easily recover once you get the machine to reboot again. I would also suggest that you use Espeak in any copy, no matter what synth you have in the installed version though, as its more likely to work correctly on a machine which might have had some corruption to it. i only use espeak, dont have any synthesizers. thanks again brian for your support. i told that i know one computer engineer that can resolve the issues to not drop xp. for example: has a solution for avoiding rewrite of appModules for xp users whome uia is not supported! On 9/1/17, Brian's Mail list account via Groups.Io <bglists@...> wrote: I think how you view this depends very much on your circumstances and availability and affordability of new gear. Hear in the UK we may often bemoan the cuts to benefits etc and say we are poor, but we are rich compared to some parts of the world, and that is why some still use XP. I don't think, in a perfect world that NV Access would want to make things
harder for those in the most need, but one has to cut ones cloth according to your needs, and in this case being as the latest nvda is now very capable indeed and XP is old and slow and has fewer programs whose latest versions work on it.
I think really it is probably precisely
because nobody wanted to drop xp that the sudden drop has occurred. If it had been planned it could have been done with less issues to those running
snapshots on XP, but even I have managed to recover things from the mess, so
it turned out just to be a corrupted update of some kind. It is a salutary
warning to us all though that its a very good idea to make a portable copy of nvda complete with the set up and add ons you use, so you can easily recover once you get the machine to reboot again. I would also suggest that you use Espeak in any copy, no matter what synth
you have in the installed version though, as its more likely to work correctly on a machine which might have had some corruption to it. Brian

Hi, Carlos,
Wow, I couldn't have said it any better! Maybe these people who refuse to change need to go hide in a cave somewhere. My very first computer was from
Computers for the Blind in Texas. I'll
go ya one better. I wasn't too lazy to go out and look for sales. Like the old saying goes, where there's a will, there's a way. I'll get off of my soap box now.

Hello All:
I can't believe the level of "whining" that is going on in regards to NVDA dropping support for older versions of Windows!
Can't you people understand that it has become a great security risk to
keep on supporting versions of Windows which Microsoft themselves will no longer support and recommend that users of older versions to upgrade!
You are not only doing harm to your own PC's. But! Every time you get
online with unsecure Windows you are also spreading whatever viruses are in
your PC's throughout the internet!
If you are unable to upgrade for monetary reasons? There are many ways
to buy legal license keys for Windows 7/e/8.1/10.
Then turn off your PC and hide under your bed and hope
and pray that Microsoft does not go into the furniture business!
It's all a matter of being a well informed blind person!
You need to get out there and find out all you can so you will be able

I don't know how anyone can characterize anyone dropping support for Windows XP or Vista at this point in time "sudden" in any way. When I go back over the last several years of development plans and announcements for virtually any software you can name there have been not just indications, but clear statements, that support was going to be dropped and that planning around that should begin. For those using either of those two versions of Windows that planning means having copies of the last suitable version for that platform for any software they intend to use. This is neither sudden nor is it the responsibility of software developers to maintain eternal backward compatibility. I still have one laptop that runs Windows XP and does just fine using the software that was written to be compatible with XP that's on it. The same should be true if you have the final screen reader (or any other type of software) version for any that were compatible with Windows XP or Vista. That's my responsibility as the end user of an operating system that's been out of official support for eight, heading into 9 years for XP, somewhat less for Vista. If you can't afford new gear it's not like you are just out of luck. You will be stuck with the last versions of software compatible with your system. NVDA 2017.3 can hardly be described as woefully inadequate as a screen reader, and that's what you'll have. -- Brian - Windows 10 Home, 64-Bit, Version 1703, Build 15063 (dot level on request - it changes too often to keep in signature)

Well we shouldn't complain, apple is the only company staying with conventions.
Look at android.
Different sweets, bars, and the like.
The next one is going to be after a biscuit.
But who is counting the names?
So far we have had marshmellows, lollypops on sticks nugar bars kitcat bars and now orio biscuits.
So as I said windows doing this is not bad, android is naming all the time.

How about Microsofts new microclimat system? :-) I'm sure there are many more versions of 10 to come though. I would however like to suggest they do not call this next update Fall. Its not Fall in Australia or new Zealand, and in any case most of us in the northern hemisphere call it autumn. What about Stakeholder edition? You hold the stake and I'll....

The only reason that I can think of of not upgrading to Windows 10 is if you really don't want Microsoft to spy on you. But for not upgrading to Windows 7? I can't think of any valid reasons...there are second hand Windows 7 computers available at local department stores at cheap prices. Even my desktop which I got in 2011 with 8GB of RAM and 3.3GHZ Intel Core I5 costs less than 30000 Thai baht (might be even less than 25000 Thai baht). I still like XP though; it's the first OS that I remember using as a child. I have a Windows XP virtual machine set up so that I can play with it whenever I want, without damaging my actual computer.

Well I do think this spying thing is a bit to overboard.
Privacy is so overboard all the world is cloud based its everyone watching everyones back.
The only times its bad is.1. you do something bad, like really bad bad enough for people to notice.
2. you get hacked and that can happen to just about anyone so its not a real big reason.
3. if something screws up.
I have had it where I was going away on a trip and had to do the government benifit thing filling out how long I would be away to make sure things went right and I didn't get cut off.
Came back to find that I had been cut off.
Rang the people and they said there was a system crash and my data was never filed.
So the system sent a message but as I was way below the cut off date they didn't deem it necessary to do much about it.
The result of that was that I got a few useless messages from a system.
In a more extreme case though we lost all net service for a while because a cloud datacentre just happened to have a drive failier which shut down a lot of things.
But the thing is things are changing.
This spying lark well you can adjust the settings but I put it like the y2k thing.
There are movies about y2k being an apocolipse.
A lot of programs were released to counter y2k, the same goes for spying, and you can turn a lot of stuff off including cortana and windows update which is spying as well as a lot of windows things as long as you pay the programmer and maybe get spyware in your system.
Even if you don't use the net yourself you will encounter it from time to time from government to well banks.
You can't avoid it just continue as you are.

But just because Microsoft collect usage information should not be why you shouldn't stay away from Windows 10. I agree that this privacy concern is too...over exaggerated. Going back to the subject of old unsupported Windows versions...if I am in a situation where my Windows XP machine is too ancient to run even Windows 7, I'd get a second hand desktop that already comes with Windows 7 SP1, which is much cheaper. This way I could continue to update NVDA and other programs and also receive security patches from Microsoft. But to be honest, my experience with recent versions of NVDA on Windows 7 is that...there's not much difference at all. This is because most of the bug fixes and new features are aimed at users of Windows 10. Soon Windows 7 will meet the same fate as Windows XP as end of life for Windows 7 is only a few years away.
