Hi,
What seems to be the issue?
Can you please provide more information?
When did the issue start?
What does it involve?

Well have you run the windows update troubleshooter?

Failing this the windows update readyness tool.

there is sfc/scannow as well as the dism/online/cleanupimage/restorehealth.

If neither of these work, windows is being stupid.

Does it happen on other systems.

If it doesn't you maybe need to reformat and reinstall windows.

If it does or you have no other thing to test this with then it could be a net issue.

I had the same issue with ms once on old win7 x86 some of this solution may still be valid I kept it about.

In that there is something to do with dns settings, fiddle with those and maybe it works maybe it doesn't then put them back.

You may also want to get your lines tested though to be honest I have no idea what one can do with newer wireless  and voip and other services.

If you ring your isp they may refresh your connection and usually it works but if it doesn't they may send someone to look at the connections.

Win10 should be fine, however I had issues with my uncle's server, his security software and a wireless card.

The system got a lot of what it thought was malware and other things some was junk and I cleared it but the security software got to good for itself and mangled the account and the system.

After recreating the mangled account and a few other reinstalls of some things, I traced the issue to faulty hardware and replaced it.

Windows defender definition updates do not show in update history, that is why you don’t see them there

If you force an update, what message is generated?

Do you have a third party firewall, maybe some silly security software installed by you ISP perhaps?

Using the Windows provided firewall.

Forcing an update check just tells me that my system is up to date.

Question, after a major update like the creators update, is the update history from previous versions deleted?

If yes, then three sounds about right. I do also notice on a friends machine it will say something like you have one critical update pending and 4 updates which are optional, and there is normally a view the list.
You then use checkboxes and tell it to go ahead.

Really? Windows being stupid? what a shock!
I'd be careful with sfc. If you do ask it to restore and register all the dlls as default this can, and does screw up any program installed that used its own version of a known dll, usually meaning it has to be repaired or reinstalled.

Windows Defender is supposed to be very similar to Microsoft Security essentials.  Microsoft Security essentials has update settings in the program itself and the program shows when it is updating if you use screen review to look at the screen.  I don't know what time of day the program usually updates, if there is one.  Are you running the latest version of Windows 10 or an earlier version?  When was your last update?

I found it did it without asking in the background just like MSSe if you set it up first, but Defender has a default I think.

At least under windows 10 version 1703, the current revision and last update time of the Windows Defender antivirus data is shown under Virus and Threat Protection -> Protection Updates.

You can also run the get-mpcomputerstatus command in PowerShell for more detailed information.

I found it did it without asking in the background just like MSSe if you set it up first, but Defender has a default I think.
it is almost exactly the same.

Windows Defender is supposed to be very similar to Microsoft Security
essentials. Microsoft Security essentials has update settings in the
program itself and the program shows when it is updating if you use screen
review to look at the screen. I don't know what time of day the program
usually updates, if there is one. Are you running the latest version of
Windows 10 or an earlier version? When was your last update?

The update history on my computer doesn't seem to show the Defender
update history and I know that there is a Defender update just about
every day. Other Windows updates don't come that often and I only show
three.

Yes that's what it ways every time. However when I check in the update
history only three entries show up.

Do you mean pressing that check for updates button. Well yes I have
done that.

Thanks heaps for all the replies. I'm sure that between us we'll get
