Hi,
John,
Let's say you want to run a filter on a message that comes into

messages till coming into the inbox from other lists. How do you
run a filter on a message?
Thanks.

What do you mean some other messages from other
lists. If your rule only applies to messages with one list name, then no
other messages will be affected. You need to make a separate rule for
every list.

If some messages aren't getting filtered, then I suspect your rules have a problem. Another thing that can happen is that sometimes people will send messages to somebody else and a list, and then if you've filtered on from: for the list address, for example, those messages will show up in your inbox because the from: is to the other person. You'd probably need to create another rule to catch that, if you can find a pattern.
Every once in a while I'll get messages from a list showing up in my inbox, but usually if you filter on the from: field and use a significant part of the address, it'll work. For example, I had a filter set up for the old NVDA list, and I filtered on nvda in the from: field. When I subscribed to the new list here, the messages started getting filtered into my nvda folder again.
If you can't figure this out yourself then yeah, I'd probably suggest skyping, or maybe skyping combined with somebody using NVDA Remote into your machine so they can look at exactly what's going on and ask questions if necessary. It depends on how technically-minded you are though. But the first thing I'd do is check what you're filtering on for whatever list. Then if you have a message that goes to the folder, and one that goes to the inbox but shouldn't, check the headers and such, check what you're filtering on, and try to find out what's different about it. Because something probably is.

In lists, the from line usually shows the actual
senders name. The to line shows the lists name and address. Many
lists have the list name in the subject line. But the from line isn't the
way to sort mail in most lists.

Subject: Re: [nvda] Using Thunderbird filters
If some messages aren't getting filtered, then I suspect your
rules have a problem. Another thing that can happen is that sometimes people
will send messages to somebody else and a list, and then if you've
filtered on from: for the list address, for example, those messages will show
up in your inbox because the from: is to the other person. You'd
probably need to create another rule to catch that, if you can find a
pattern. Every once in a while I'll get messages from a list showing
up in my inbox, but usually if you filter on the from: field and use
a significant part of the address, it'll work. For example, I had a
filter set up for the old NVDA list, and I filtered on nvda in the from:
field. When I subscribed to the new list here, the messages started
getting filtered into my nvda folder again. If you can't figure
this out yourself then yeah, I'd probably suggest skyping, or maybe skyping
combined with somebody using NVDA Remote into your machine so they can look
at exactly what's going on and ask questions if necessary. It depends on how
technically-minded you are though. But the first thing I'd do is check what
you're filtering on for whatever list. Then if you have a message that goes
to the folder, and one that goes to the inbox but shouldn't, check the
headers and such, check what you're filtering on, and try to find out what's
different about it. Because something probably is. On 10/25/2017

Hi Group,
Assuming that you have attempted to create the filters by
clicking tools/filters/new, be advised that the select a folder
aspect is a bit kinky with screen readers. You must treat that
list box like a combo box using alt + down arrow to open the
folder list and once selecting the right folder to filter messages
into, press either enter or alt + up arrow to close the box and
select the folder.
Everyone who is new to Thunderbird (including me) seems to run
across this and it is temporarily confusing until you figure out
what is going on.

Hi, Ron,
I did all those steps and I still can't get messages moved to
their proper folders. I've hit enter on all the folders but I'm
still having some messages from other lists go to my inbox instead
of their proper folders. Why isn't this working for me? In
outlook, you just hit the context key and arrow down to "always
move messages from" and then the name of the messages.

What do you mean some other

Hi Rosemarie,
I just wonder if the filters are set correctly. To check this,
click tools/filters and highlight a non working rule. Then click
edit and examine what the rule states. If it looks good--that is
to say--if all the specifications are correct, then I don't know
what to tell you. It's worth a check because of that goofy issue
with selecting proper folders.

that issue of choosing folders sure is goofy. It's so much easier to create filters in outlook.

I should make a possible correction. I said
you need a different rule for every list. I don't know if that is
true. I don't know if you can put multiple things for a rule to look for
such as the names of more than one list. I believe I've only heard of
people using one rule for one list and another rule for another list. If
there is a setting that will allow you to put multiple items in one rule, such
as I gave an example of before, you may not be doing it correctly or you may be
using the wrong setting. Others may be able to explain how to do this, or
you may just want to create one rule for each list. It might be more work
but since you have written a rule that works on some messages, you know that the
rule is working to an extent. So you may be able to use that suggestion to
make a rule, one for each list, that works.
I said before that working with someone in real
time would be a good idea. You say you go through all the steps.
That doesn't mean you do or do correctly. It means you think you go
through all the steps. No one can be sure what to tell you without every
step being listed in a message, every field you fill out or check and uncheck,
every combo box you work with, how and what you set it to, etc. That is
why I say you should work with someone in real time. So you can make a
rule and they can hear every step you do. Either that or record yourself
making a rule and sending the recording to the list. But without those
trying to help knowing every step, no one can know or make a properly informed
guess about what you are doing incorrectly.

Then the question is, what is wrong with the rules
that don't work? Are you sure all the lists have what you tell the rule to
look for where you tell it to look? Are you sure the spelling is exactly
correct for every item you are using? I'm not sure what else might account
for some of the rules not working.
It might be that if you wrote out every step for a
rule that doesn't work, that someone will be able to find the error. That
is tedious but it may work. It might be much faster and more likely to
find the error to work with someone.

It sounds as though you generally did things
correctly but you probably shouldn't have unchecked the automatically check for
new mail check box. Check it and see what happens. If you have set
things up correctly as far as you know and something doesn't work, try the only
thing that might make a difference assuming everything else has been done
correctly. What is it? It's automatically check for mail. Have
you seen an explanation for what this setting does? Most likely, it tells
the rule to be applied every time you check for new mail. Unchecking it
probably only causes the rule to be run when you manually tell it to run.

I haven't seen an explanation for this seting. I'll give it another shot and let you all know what happens.

Hi, Gene,
I didcheck that box and I slightly changed the rule a little bit.
This time I went by the subject field and typed the subject of the
message and then did the remaining steps for creating the rule.
This time it worked.

Hi,
Gene,
Here
are the steps I took to create the rules. I'll use the music
list I'm on as an example.
1. I
went to tools with alt T and hit f for message filters.
2. I
tabbed to the new button and hit the space bar on it.

7. I
tabbed to where you choose a folder. I chose the folder for
the music list and hit enter on it.
8. I
tabbed to the ok button and hit the space bar on it.
9.
When I was taken back to the screen where you'd create a new
rule, I tabbed to the run now button and hit enter on it.
The filter did work for awhile but then I got new messages
from that list in my inbox so I don't know where the problem
could be.

Hi, Robert,
I already did all that. Some other messages from the other
lists are still going into the inbox. I don't know what else
to do.
