First impressions of NVDA 2019.3 beta 1

Christo de Klerk

Hello all

I have made a portable installation of the beta of NVDA 2019.3 to test it. I find it noticeably more responsive than 2019.2.1. It appears to be perfectly stable.

One issue I am having, is that nothing speaks in a command console. opened as Administrator. Would that be because the command console has been opened as Administrator and I am using a portable copy of NVDA?

The only other thing is that I miss some incompatible apps.

Kind regards

Christo

Hi,
I hope that by the time I get my braille me in February, that NVDA will work with it.

For me also the current incompatibility of the BrailleMe add-on is a showstopper. Innovision is aware of this and they are working on it.

Hi.
The NVDA 2019.3 will have screen curtain. After installing the beta you can create a gesture which will allow you to enable the screen curtain. The screen curtain turns the screen black. This means sighted folks will not be able to see what you are doing. My mum confirmed this, as she was not able to see anything I was doing while screen curtain on.

Hi.

In the beta  there is a vision category. Along with focus highlight there’s screen curtain. If you go to input gestures, scroll down to the vision category, expand it, and you will see something like toggles the state of the screen curtain. I think the vision category can also be found in NVDA settings.

No, your existing copy of NVDA will be replaced by the beta. You might want to make a portable copy of the beta rather than installing it to your machine.

I tried it and had to shut down because the reaction time was tremendously slow. So, I guess I am going to have to bite the bullet and install it over 2019.2.1

Hi

I will usually use a portable copy of NVDA to test stuff which I launch off my hard drive with a shortcut.

Below are the restrictions from the user guide for a portable version of NVDA.

3.1. Portable and Temporary Copy Restrictions
Apart from the inability to automatically start during and/or after log-on, the portable and temporary copies of NVDA also have the following restrictions:
• The inability to interact with applications running with administrative privileges, unless of course NVDA itself has been run also with these privileges (not recommended).
• The inability to read User Account Control (UAC) screens when trying to start an application with administrative privileges.
• Windows 8 and later: the inability to support input from a touchscreen.
• Windows 8 and later: the inability to provide features such as browse mode and speaking of typed characters in Windows Store apps.
• Windows 8 and later: audio ducking is not supported.
