New Member Seeking Tutorials

Hello;

I am a new user and just subscribed to this list.  I wonder if one can obtain a daily digest of messages to this list?  Also I’m looking for a good comprehensive tutorisl.  I’ve seen lots of youtube posts that briefly cover one or two features of the program but nothing that I felt was very comprehensive.  I wonder if anyone has any suggestions?

Hello All,

 

What follows is an informational message about how to manage your subscription and, more importantly, e-mail options under Groups.io.  The general principle applies across groups, but you would have to use the appropriate Groups.io mailing address for the specific group you wish to change.  The examples are for the NVDA Group

 

         Just like you subscribed yourself, should you wish to unsubscribe you can, and should, unsubscribe yourself.  Sending an e-mail message to  nvda+unsubscribe@nvda.groups.io will unsubscribe you.  You will also receive one final message that you have been unsubscribed.  If you do not receive your unsubscribe confirmation, then please send a message to the group owner address and we will research why it is failing.  It very seldom does.

 

          You also have the option of remaining subscribed, but putting yourself on "no mail" status.  Using this method has the added advantage of retaining group membership and not putting your first message under moderation when you post again later.  Should you wish to do that instead, send a message to  nvda+nomail@nvda.groups.io.   You can pick up with mailing again at any time by sending a message to the one of the group email management addresses:

nvda+single@nvda.groups.io 

To receive individual messages instead of digests or a summary

nvda+fulldigest@nvda.groups.io 

To receive full featured digests instead of individual messages

nvda+summary@nvda.groups.io 

To receive a daily summary instead of individual messages

the link is to the main page you see. It covers blindness related material along with nvda tutorials.


If you pick one off the main page for nvda it will link to the internal website where the nvda tutorials are all in one table if you get what I mean.


it will also point you in the right directions for a lot of stuff plus you can also buy training material from nvaccess shop for outlook, word, exce, nvda and a power point one is coming.

Depending on how much you know about working with Windows and Windows programs and browsing, you may only need specific information such as how to use object navigation, and screen review.  The quick navigation keys for browsing will be very similar between JAWS and NVDA and my impression is that Window-eyes used roughly the same commands toward the end of its versions.
 
I can't suggest specific tutorials but that may help you know what to look for.

I took a look at the training material on the nvda site and had a question or two.  The basic training version is initially shown as an e-book.  Will this be something that can be read with word or will need some additional software.

Secondly there is a more expensive version which appears to be mp3.  Does anyone know how current the mp3 version is?  I think I saw a notice that it was done with a windows 7 pc so I wonder if there using the latest greatest version of nvda?

Any information appreciated.

So yes it appears that you can use Word, or your web browser or eBook reading programs if you would prefer that.

 

I don’t know what the status of the mp3   material is.

Hi Richard,

Good questions!  As David noted, the electronic text version comes as a zip file which includes the book as a web page (html), Word (docx), electronic book (ePub) and Kindle (kfx) formats - they are all identical, it's just up to personal preference which format you prefer to read.

The audio and Braille versions were updated last year, just after we updated the electronic text version.  We tried to keep them accurate for users with Windows 7 through to Windows 10 and the current (at the time) NVDA.  So, it should give you enough information to be able to get to a program using the Start menu for instance, although it doesn't necessarily cover every new aspect of the latest incarnation of the Windows 10 start menu.
