Numpad Issue With NVDA And Thunderbird

Robert Logue

I just tried.  highlighting and pressing nvda numpad 5; while reading a thunderbird message body.  I have about the same result except NVDA says "section"."

I also tried while composing and got a slightly different result.

about:blank  document  focused  editable
" plus the line the cursor is on.

Just press numpad 5 alone, to read the word the cursor is on, and press twice to spell.

There was no problem using nvda+numpad 5 in the message headers.

version 2019.3 portable.

and

2019.1.1 installed.

Thunderbird  60.9.1

I am not quite sure when this started--probably with the 2019.3 update, but now when I am in a Thunderbird message and I want to try to highlight a word in an open message and check the spelling, when I press insert + numpad 5, NVDA says: 'blank.'  This also occurs in the subject field and the other header fields.

Has anyone else noticed this and is there a work around?

I wasn't sure what commands you were discussing before.  Now, I'll comment on them:
You shouldn't have turned off
insert +keyboard 6 carrot moves review cursor toggle on/off,
and insert + keyboard 7focus moves navigator object toggle on/off.  These are on by default and the point is to have the object navigator move as you move in a program such as a word processor or in lists or on the desktop or wherever you are moving.  If you want to move the object navigator to a certain place on the screen and stay there while you did things in programs or Windows so that when you return to the program where you left it, it would still be there and you could check the information on that part of the screen simply with a read current line of the object navigator command, numpad 8, or read current word of object navigator, numpad 5.  In general, though, you would want these settings on so the object navigator would follow where you move.

Hi Gene,

In one of the previous messages I sent, I postulated that I might have changed some settings that caused the issue in the first place. You can make quick changes to Let's see, I'll press each one of these as I write this:

insert + 2 speak typed characters toggle on/off
insert + keyboard 3 speak typed words toggle on/off
insert+ keyboard 4 toggle command keys on/off
insert + keyboard 5 report dynamic changes toggle on/off
insert +keyboard 6 carrot moves review cursor toggle on/off
insert + keyboard 7focus moves navigator object toggle on/off
insert + keyboard 8 automatically set system focus to focus able elements on/off

Three of these settings had been turned off.  I turned two of them back on and the problem went away.  The only one I don't have on is the speak command keys item.  That's a pain if it's on.

If you don't get the correct text read in object review and you did in earlier versions of NVDA with Thunderbird, then there is a problem with how NVDA is working with the program.  I should say that there is a problem if Thunderbird hasn't been upgraded so you are working with a version you know worked properly.  Have you tried a portable NVDA of the previous stable version with whatever version of Thunderbirde you are currently using to make sure the problem is only an NVDA problem?

Hi Gene,

I used to be in object review and I could read the word and spell the
word with a press and two presses of the numpad 5 key.  Now all I get is
blank.  I also tried with screen review.  I routed the mouse to the word
with numpad slash and then pressed the 5 while in screen review and
still got the rendering of blank when pressing the numpad 5 key.

As I recall, when in an edit field when I press insert + numpad 1 or 7,
a third option was document review.  Now in Thunderbird, I don't get
this third choice.

That's a different command.  Numpad 8, just numpad 8 announces the current line of the current object.  If your application cursor is on the line of the subject line, numpad 8 will speak it.  Numpad 8 twice will spell it.  the original message discussed wanting to hear a word to check its spelling.  For that, you would use numpad 5 if the application cursor is on the word you want.  .

Hi Gene

I guess if i wanted to read the subject line i would hit the number 8 2 times to have it spelled out or just the once to hear it.

Not the nvda key + 5 but it seems to do it similar.

I guess I could do like a trouble shooting in nvda and give a demo of what to do so they can hear the difference on the website.

Using insert numpad 5 does indeed report and spell the current navigator object.  Compare the description of that command with input help on with just numpad 5 with input help on, where the action is different but should do what Ron wants. Insert numpad 5 reports the current navigator object.  Issued twice, the command spells the current navigator object.  That means that far more than one word may be spelled.  Numpad 5 reports the current word of the navigator object.  it is roughly equivalent to say currewnt word.  Issued twice, it is roughly equivalent to spell current word.  for Ron's purposes, just numpad 5 should be used,  As I said, insert numpad 5 may announce far more than the current word and insert numpad 5 twice may spell far more than the current word.  I just trieed insert numpad 5 in a Notepad document and an entire line was read.  Insert numpad 5 read just the current word.  Either insert may be used..

I should add that if the newest stable version of NVDA doesn't track the application cursor in Thunderbird, neither command will work as expected.  But there is a reasonable chance that numpad 5 pressed twice will do what is wanted.  We'll see.

Also, you should be in object navigation mode when you use either of these commands when you want to work with where the application cursor is.  If you are not in object review, you may have text read that doesn't reflect where you are.  I've said before that you should automatically be placed in object review no matter what mode you are currently in when you move to a new window.  This is one more instance why.

In which mode are you in?

Pressing the insert key + 5 on the numeric key pad does nothing.

But if you use the number 5 on the numeric keypad by its self on a word
it if pressed 2 times will spell out that word.

If you use the insert key + 5 on the main key board it will turn on and
off report dynamic changes on and off.

Are you editing a document or reading it with the review cursor?

Is nvda in object navigation mode? Use the nvda key + 1 to do this otherwise you might get some strange affects like you mentioned in a earlier email.

I used to be in object review and I could read the word and spell the word with a press and two presses of the numpad 5 key.  Now all I get is blank.  I also tried with screen review.  I routed the mouse to the word with numpad slash and then pressed the 5 while in screen review and still got the rendering of blank when pressing the numpad 5 key.

As I recall, when in an edit field when I press insert + numpad 1 or 7, a third option was document review.  Now in Thunderbird, I don't get this third choice.

But if you use the number 5 on the numeric keypad by its self on a word it if pressed 2 times will spell out that word.

If you use the insert key + 5 on the main key board it will turn on and off report dynamic changes on and off.

Are you editing a document or reading it with the review cursor?

Has anyone else noticed this and is there a work around?

Hi Gene,

This isn't my day for giving examples.  On another list, I gave an incorrect command.  I know the keystroke for spelling a word in numpad 5.  In any case, on my system, NVDA says: 'blank.'

I meant to say that insert numpad 5 read far more than the current word in the Notepad document.  Just numpad 5 only read the current word.

Also, I would strongly suggest that people get in the habit of always returning to object navigation mode after using any other mode.  Since NVDA doesn't do this automatically, ppeople should always do this.

I think the other Gene is correct and that it is likely that you are in review mode and that is causing the problem.  If so, this is just one more illustration of my contention that you should always be returned to object navigation mode when you move out of the current window.

Hi Ron

Try the following.

On the numeric key pad press the nvda key +num pad 1 so you go to object navigation.

Then go back to the subject line then use the review cursor now it reads. If left in the other mode nvda key + 7 it will not read the subject in the header etc if you get what I mean.

If you also say locate a word with the review cursor in your email then press the num pad 5 key 2 times it will spell it letter by letter.

I am guessing this is what has happened.

I don't know what is causing the problem.  But using a different command should solve it.  You should be able to have the word you are on in the document spelled by just pressing numpad 5 by itself.  That Is the equivalent of spell current word even though it is defined as spelling the current navigator object.  One press will say the current word.  Two will spell it.
