In one of the previous messages I sent, I postulated that I might have changed some settings that caused the issue in the first place. You can make quick changes to Let's see, I'll press each one of these as I write this:

insert + 2 speak typed characters toggle on/off
insert + keyboard 3 speak typed words toggle on/off
insert+ keyboard 4 toggle command keys on/off
insert + keyboard 5 report dynamic changes toggle on/off
insert +keyboard 6 carrot moves review cursor toggle on/off
insert + keyboard 7focus moves navigator object toggle on/off
insert + keyboard 8 automatically set system focus to focus able elements on/off

Three of these settings had been turned off.  I turned two of them back on and the problem went away.  The only one I don't have on is the speak command keys item.  That's a pain if it's on.

I can't tell what you are describing.  You can use either insert, the numpad insert or the other insert but you must use the keys on the numpad for hearing what we are discussing.

Hi Gene,

I used to be in object review and I could read the word and spell the
word with a press and two presses of the numpad 5 key.  Now all I get is
blank.  I also tried with screen review.  I routed the mouse to the word
with numpad slash and then pressed the 5 while in screen review and
still got the rendering of blank when pressing the numpad 5 key.

As I recall, when in an edit field when I press insert + numpad 1 or 7,
a third option was document review.  Now in Thunderbird, I don't get
this third choice.

I guess if i wanted to read the subject line i would hit the number 8 2 times to have it spelled out or just the once to hear it.

Not the nvda key + 5 but it seems to do it similar.

I guess I could do like a trouble shooting in nvda and give a demo of what to do so they can hear the difference on the website.

Using insert numpad 5 does indeed report and spell the current navigator object.  Compare the description of that command with input help on with just numpad 5 with input help on, where the action is different but should do what Ron wants. Insert numpad 5 reports the current navigator object.  Issued twice, the command spells the current navigator object.  That means that far more than one word may be spelled.  Numpad 5 reports the current word of the navigator object.  it is roughly equivalent to say currewnt word.  Issued twice, it is roughly equivalent to spell current word.  for Ron's purposes, just numpad 5 should be used,  As I said, insert numpad 5 may announce far more than the current word and insert numpad 5 twice may spell far more than the current word.  I just trieed insert numpad 5 in a Notepad document and an entire line was read.  Insert numpad 5 read just the current word.  Either insert may be used..

 

I should add that if the newest stable version of NVDA doesn't track the application cursor in Thunderbird, neither command will work as expected.  But there is a reasonable chance that numpad 5 pressed twice will do what is wanted.  We'll see.

 

Also, you should be in object navigation mode when you use either of these commands when you want to work with where the application cursor is.  If you are not in object review, you may have text read that doesn't reflect where you are.  I've said before that you should automatically be placed in object review no matter what mode you are currently in when you move to a new window.  This is one more instance why.

This isn't my day for giving examples.  On another list, I gave an incorrect command.  I know the keystroke for spelling a word in numpad 5.  In any case, on my system, NVDA says: 'blank.'
