Hi, I have used Jaws for years.  I’m giving NVDA another look.  When I’m writing an email it says dot instead of period.  How do I change this?  Is there any way to turn off column 4 row 3 etc. when on a webpage? Is there anyway when using outlook as your typing who the message is to to have the auto complete suggest automatically spoken?

You can change what NVDA says for any punctuation or symbol in the Punctuation and Symbols settings, NVDA+N,P,P.  I presume you mean the period at the end of a sentence, in which case the very first item you will see in the list is for the period, sentence ending, with its replacement as "dot."  If you get yourself to the Replacement box, erase dot, type period (spelled out), and hit the OK button that will be changed.

As Sarah has mentioned, it depends on how and when you want a given thing pronounced.   NVDA, like most complex software, is highly configurable, but you (or I, when advising) have to know exactly what the circumstance is when "dot" is being pronounced where you'd prefer period instead.

I will always presume this is when you're going character by character, and hitting punctuation marks, unless specified otherwise.  It also matters where.  There is the sentence ending period and there is the period used elsewhere, and those are considered separate instances of the character.

              This is a serious question:  When did it say it as dot?

              In playing with this, until I set both the period, sentence ending to read as period instead of dot, and set the straight period character to read as period instead of dot, if I wrote a sentence with a terminal period and then began backspacing out characters it would read as dot.   Once both were set to period then it was reading as period.  This suggests to me that when backspacing out characters to delete them NVDA is matching characters as single characters (which makes sense) rather than trying to use sentence context.  I don't want punctuation pronounced as a general rule, so I have not turned on anything that makes this occur when actually writing.  So when I put the period on any of these sentences it is not announced at all, nor are the letters as I type or the words as I complete them.

Then, do as I did.  In the Punctuation and symbols dialog search at the top for the word, "dot".   It only comes up about five times, and two of those are for the sentence ending period and the straight single period character.  Change both of those instances to "period" for the replacement instead of dot.  And unless you want ellipses read as period period period rather than dot dot dot leave those instances alone.

For table row/column, you need to turn off “Cell coordinates" Checkbox from NVDA’s document formatting list (NVDA menu/Preferences/Settings/document formatting/tables group; CAUTION: do not turn off cell coordinates while using Excel, as it will prevent NVDA from announcing which cell you are working on).

As for auto-complete in Outlook, it is already working, although it doesn’t work properly if one is using an older build of Office 365 or earlier version of Office.
