NVDA Systematic Crash
Vlad Dragomir
Greetings,
I’ve recently switched laptops, and on this new one, NVDA crashes systematically at each restart, right at the beginning, after I type the pin on the lockscreen. Would any of our beloved experts be kind enough to assist me in, at least diagnosing, if not solving this?
A few more details: there are no errors in either nvda.Log or nvda-old.Log. On the other hand, there is a file in Temp named “nvda_crash.Dmp”, whose contents seems unreadable to humans, or at least non-specialists like me. Would it help if I pasted the contents of that file in an email here for someone able to decode it? Thank you very much in advance, grateful regards.

Hi, The dmp file is a crash dump, which requires a debugger to parse what it is saying (as such, you cannot paste the contents of this file, otherwise it may become unreadable once a person with a debugger opens it as things can change while transmitting over the internet). A few questions:
Cheers, Joseph

Hello,
Thanks Joseph for the reply. Answers:

Hi, Before doing that, try running NVDA with add-ons disabled (open Run dialog, type “nvda –disable-addons” without quotes and press Enter provided that NVDA is installed). If NVDA starts, chances are that it might be an add-on or two. Cheers, Joseph

Apologies, I realise now I didn’t tell everything. That crash only happens once after restart. If I try to launch NVDA again, it runs perfectly well without any flaws. But as soon as I restart, it’s first run goes south again, only once. Am I making more sense?

Hi, Yes, makes more sense. As for why it crashes, try disabling all add-ons and see what happens next time you log onto your computer. Cheers, Joseph

Thanks once more Joseph. I did just that. Result: with no add-ons enabled, everything’s perfect, no crash at all. With only a few add-ons enabled, the crash happens but later in time, about two minutes after logon, and it’s independent of what I am doing. With all add-ons enabled, it happens right after logon, just after NVDA starts for the first time and says “taskbar”. I suppose this is complicated, maybe I should learn to live with it, I’ve bothered you enough already. Thousands of thanks indeed!

Hi, At least we’re getting somewhere. Don’t worry about bothering me too much (I should have more time to respond to threads like this for the next few weeks). Cheers, Joseph

Wow I’m truly grateful then.
One more thing I’ve noticed. If I uncheck the box “Automatically start NVDA after I log on to Windows” in Settings, and manually start NVDA a few seconds after restart, everything’s perfect. Which makes me want to ask this: is there any way to tell NVDA to start, let’s say, 10 seconds after startup? Would that help?
Cheers back,
Vlad.

Hi, You can’t change how long Windows will wait after you log in before starting something – more so in Windows 8.x and later due to Ease of Access integration. Cheers, Joseph

I see. Well, nothing to do then, I’m running out of ideas, will stop exploring for the time being. Assistance very much appreciated. This thing is a little bit annoying, but certainly not stopping me from using the computer.
Gratefully,
Vlad.

It may be better to just let NVDA crash, then start
it again. You said after the first crash, it works properly. The
crash won't hurt anything, it will just mean you have to run the program
again.
it sounds as though NVDA is trying to run before
something in Windows has loaded that an add-on needs to load. If you want
to use all the add-ons you have, as I said, it may just be better to let NVDA
crash. If you are trying to solve the problem because you are worried
about harm being caused, you don't have to worry. Some problems are better
left as they are.

You need to start re-enabling one add-on at a time, then check after the next log in whether it's working. When it fails, you'll know which add-on is causing it. If you find one that causes it, disable that one again, and enable some other one, and see if it continues. Then you'll have a good idea where the problem is. Also, get the Add-on Updater add-on if you don't have it already, to make sure all your add-ons are on the latest versions. Luke
