updating to the latest snap, but still waiting for the update to finish
I think I have a very broken nvda update. I followed the directions. The update downloaded, however I still hear the beeps saying it's updating etc et etc. I tried to close out but no joy. Narrator is not telling me much either. Running nvda latest snap on windows 10 pro..
Take care all. |

Ok, I retarted my computer using the command prompt and all worked. I have no clue what happened, or why but I hoep what ever happened does not happen again. Any clue as to what went on? The update worked this time.

Normally, the version of snapshot often times to be tested for quality if you curious how it works, but again it's up to you to test. Some here were eager to be tester to themselves to help our developers to improves the function wise. Otherwise, go with stable rather. Again, it is advisable to use snapshot to testing machine or have it save to flash drive. Robert Mendoza On 12/7/2017 2:44 PM, Michael Capelle wrote:

At times, snapshots have features not yet in the
release version. Also, some people run them as a form of beta testing,
which is an important reason they are made available.
There are snapshots in a different category that
incorporate code that hasn't been tested to any extent at all yet and that's
more like Alfa testing.

If you do an alt tab, often you find an error there about a file being stuck or something. Restart windows and if the installed copy actually still runs try it again.

I think this can also sometimes be fixed by merely logging of as you and logging back in again. Its not the only program that does this from time to time, even on windows 7. I suspect but cannot prove that a recent update to Windows Defender/MSSe has made it moor pro active on looking at changed files in some circumstances. brian bglists@... Sent via blueyonder. I tend to have snaps as portables, but at present am running the master branch as installed.

I find that if I get an error or lock up on a snap I often here the error sound, whereas the release version just stops working. This allows me to look at the log and see what is going on and raise an issue. If nobody did this a lot of bugs would get missed. You are right in that if you are using it to do important work you would not do this. Brian bglists@... Sent via blueyonder. I had this with the 2017.4 release and it turned out to be a UAC window in the background waiting for permission to allow the install. Cheers Chris -----Original Message-----

Well I just updated to the latest master and it failed to restart. the error screen one could not read said it could not write to the log file and it thus stayed shut down. A manual start started it. I did look at the old log and noted that it was still dealing with attempting to delete old bits of files when it was asked to shut down, watchdog stopped then it all stopped with only the old error of multiple whatever they are then silence. I suspect as I said in the original ticket for this. its so busy processing locked files that when it comes to rename nvda.log to nvda.old.log it fails and hence does not create it and just gives up writing a log in the program files called nvda.exe.log which is the lack of ability to write to the log that it should have started as a new log but in fact is still locked in a queue waiting for windows to catch up and rename the old one!

We've seen a couple of issues with updating - both the never completing update like this, and also random errors after updating NVDA and before restarting the PC. In both cases, try restarting to fix it, but also in both cases, if you have a log which has captured anything useful about it, feel free to send it through to me. While getting people to reboot is a relatively easy fix, it would still be nice to get to the bottom of it and work out why it's happening for some users. I run Master as my everyday, and next as portable. The best plan is always have a known good config in a portable version somewhere so you can in effect copy over any problem version that may pop out.

Hi. Restart your PC then try and to restart the update. I had this problem when NVDA 2017 RC3 came out.

Often if you enable narrator, then do a few alt tabs, you will find an error message behind the stalled update screen.

Make a note, mentally what this says, probably something like cannot write to or delete or rename a file at a guess.. Try to close it either with its button or esc and if you have been successful, attempt to run your back up portable version of nvda. If that works after a short pause then you can try to start the installed copy. It will probably fail with an error, but you can of course revert back to the back up one! Now manually download the update from the web site and install it over the one that was installed. This normally then works I find. For the record when these things fail seems to be when for a reason as yet not known, Windows sits and takes an age to do something and things kind of time out and you get an error but that blocks up the rest of the work pending in the install. As the person says, if you can its probably then a good idea to reboot windows as this should clear any debris left behind marked for deletion. Something changed in both windows 7 and 10 about a month or so back that made this occasional issue more common. and no I have no idea what it is either unless its anti virus checking the changing files in the background. Yes this is the thing. It seems as if the system gets buffered up to its nostrils in files to delete rename or whatever and it simply refuses to do them unless you reboot windows. It affects windows 7 as well but its something quite recent and only happens at odd times.

My suspicion is a recent windows update. as 7 and 10 are actually very similar internally I'd bet that a caching is going on to try to speed things up but its not clearing and basically getting stuck. Obviously if you like I watch what is going on in the log of the temp version when you do an update Windows has a lot to do to delete, rename and move stuff as well as copying. If you happen to already have a few things pending I think it pushes it over the edge. Brian bglists@... Sent via blueyonder.
