How to Fix Sluggish Responsiveness When Arrowing Through a Word Document
David Goldfield
First, I will say that this issue only seems to manifest on my Dell Optiplex 740, a machine which some might consider to be ancient by today's standards. I don't seem to have this problem on my much newer and more high-powered Dell Lattitude laptops which I use for work-related tasks.
The machine that I'm dealing with is running Windows 10 Pro, build 1909. Using NVDA 2020.1 with Microsoft 365 Home. Using Espeak but I have access to Codefactory's Nuance/Eloquence synthesizer as well as Acapela. In a Word document responsiveness is noticeably sluggish when I navigate through a document, particularly when navigating character by character with left/right arrow keys. Here are some steps I can take which slightly improves responsiveness. 1. Restoring the document from a maximized size. 2. Setting the document to draft mode from the view tab. 3. Enabling UIA support in Advanced Settings. While these three steps do help the fact is that responsiveness is still slower than it is with other programs, such as with Wordpad or LibreOffice Writer. At one point the problem seemed to have gone away but it is now back. Also, sometimes characters are occasionally not spoken when I navigate to them and increasing the caret timeout seems to make little or no difference. I'm open to any suggestions which may improve NVDA's performance with Word. -- David Goldfield, Blindness Assistive Technology Specialist JAWS Certified, 2019 WWW.DavidGoldfield.org

Have you tried running the com registration fixing tool in NVDA tools?
I doubt it will help, but it won't hurt. Luke

I don't know if it is still the case, but Word used
to have a responsiveness problem in general, as far as I know, with
screen-readers. Perhaps the increased speed of the other computers is
partly why you don't experience it with them.

Gene, I will admit that the speed of my older OptiPlex desktop may well be a factor and I may just have to accept that fact. However, and I hesitate to say this as I don't wish to start a comparison war among users, I don't recall ever encountering this with JAWS, including on this same machine. In fairness, there is a very, very slight difference with JAWS in Word as opposed to JAWS with other word processors in that there is a small delay but it is very slight, hardly noticeable and very acceptable. The point that I'm making is that using Word on this slower machine does not give me a slow experience on a global level.

Nothing inherently evil about comparisons is there? If someone else can do it, this means it can be done, which in itself is a valuable data point. It is in our best interest to compare our tools, improve them based on each other, and select the right one for the right job. Best, Felix Am Sa., 23. Have you tried running the com registration fixing tool in NVDA tools?I hadn't but did so after reading your suggestion. It's possible that I'm noticing a slight amount of improvement since doing so and so I appreciate the advice. After comparing NVDA's performance in Word as well as with JAWS 2020 I will say that JAWS also exhibits a slight slow-down in responsiveness on my machine, as well, compared to how it handles Wordpad. The slowdown is not as annoying as it is with NVDA but even with JAWS there is still a difference. Therefore, this is not really an NVDA issue but JAWS is just handling it a bit better. I may just have to accept that this may be a limitation of my current machine and may only be able to really solve for it by getting a computer with more high end or at least more modern specs. You could try an office repair. Find office on your programs and features menu, hit the context key, select change (or modify), and choose online repair. Regards Louis Maher Phone: 713-444-7838 E-mail ljmaher03@outlook.com

Sorry if you answered this earlier in the thread David, but what are the specs on that machine? Memory and CPU (speed and cores)?

Hey David, I don't know if Office 365 has it, but under options, I

think under view tab, there's an option that refers to live preview. Disabling it really speeds up Word. Have a great holiday weekend.

I reviewed this setting, which is in the general settings tab. Microsoft help has this to say about it:
Enable Live Preview Select this option to preview the effects of formatting changes in the document. So, I am not sure why this would effect arrowing performance, but at least you know how to get there. While I was in there I turned off the mini-toolbar for selection, which I think is the annowing feature that asks you if you want to keep styles when you paste.

Jonathan, it affects arrowing performance because the document is

being changed in its entirety as you're trying to arrow around. It doesn't help blind folks much & indeed serves to slow speech down. Thanks for letting us know where it is, cuz I personally don't have Office 365.
