Navigating a Word Document with Editable Fields?

Hello,

I am unable to navigate this attached word document with NVDA. Does anyone know NVDA settings or word settings I can do to make this document readable?

Here are the problems:

1.       I am unable to press left or right arrow keys, or ctrl+left or ctrl+right arrow keys to move through each row.

2.       I am unable to erase content after typing it without arrowing down, out of the box, then arrowing back into the box

3.       The text in between the tables is not read by NVDA

4.       Using table navigation commands doesn't seem to work properly, from column 2, I am unable to move to column 1.

5.       When arrowing through the table, I sometimes get stuck in an endless loop, around the check boxes

6.       Arrowing up and down doesn't seem to always show the same content I just past.

Thank you,

Luke Davis

Attachments can't be sent to the list; it didn't come through.

You'll need to put it in Dropbox or something, or send it to someone off-list who can do that. (I can)

Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, or similar is probably the best way to share a copy of this document.  I've just used a free cloud solution when I needed to share something widely among the readership here.

Also don't forget about Firefox Send (https://send.firefox.com), which lets you send a file that expires after a certain number of days or downloads. (I believe 1 day and 1 download, if you don't have an account.)

Brandon,

This appears to be a very decently designed MS-Word fillable form, at least strictly from a visual standpoint, accessibility is another thing.  The form itself is password protected, so I cannot dissect the form in detail.  There do not appear to be any tables visually, and why this designer chose to use them I have no idea, as I'm hearing what you are when traversing the form.  The form just a series of text form fields, with the exception of the Date Awarded, which is a dropdown that allows selection from a calendar, though you can type in mm/dd/yyyy if you so choose.

I can tab and shift+Tab to move to the next/previous form fields.  Home/End take me to the first/last position in a form field.  But only some of the fields have any alt-text to tell you what they are.

The text in between the fields is not accessible, nor should it be accessible, while the form is in "fillable" mode and if the designer knew what they were doing they should have placed alt text on each fillable item that tells you what the labels that are part of the form show.  They also should not have used tables in a form of this type.  There are times they're helpful, but not here.

I don't know what options you have as far as seeking assistance with, and giving feedback about, this form.  But whoever designed this doesn't know even basic accessibility principles for a fillable form.

Brandon,

Where there's a will, and a bit of devious research, there's a way.  This link is to a downloadable version of the form you provided earlier, but in RTF format, on my Google Drive with all protections removed:  https://drive.google.com/uc?export=download&id=1_MxI6QBGRvzVw3uq-_MLIBjn_QNB1uJV

As a result, it behaves very much like any regular word document, and you can feel free to promptly do a Save As and save it in docx format again.  I left all of the form fields in the document.  Everywhere that you need to fill in will have the phrase "Click or tap here to enter text" which you can select and actually fill in what was noted in the document just before that.  The exception is the date, where the phrase, "Click or tap here to enter date" is used.

The table format remains, but at least you should be able to hear what you need to hear in order to fill this thing out independently.

Hello Bryan,
Thank you, I know who built it, so I'll send them some materials on making accessible Word forms. I sent them some information on accessible PDF forms earlier, but it is slightly different in Word.
I've never used an accessible form in Word, other than some check boxes,, so didn't know what to expect.
Thank you,

First off, did you verify that the document was not protected? Everytime I see a protected Word document I think of the play Camelot, where they say FIE on this FIE on that  so to take a document out of protected mode press alt followed by F followed by I followed by E.  (File Info Enable Editting )

It has been a long time since I saw a word form, and I understand that the areas you are not supposed to edit will be read-only, but should be readble with the review cursor.
