Focus Issues on Facebook Desktop Site Using Firefox

Hello. Is the subject apt for anyone else but me? I am having many focus issues on the Facebook desktop site, using NVDA alpha-20400,675c4c54. I"m using Firefox 77.0.1 on Windows 10 version 1909 Build 18363.900. I've had focus issues for quite some time. Here are latest issues. I will do my best to describe.
When I read posts, I use browse mode, pressing "h" to move from heading to heading. If I want to like a post, I navigate to the like button. When I press enter on it, it appears to be stuck in the reactions area. If I press escape, I am thrown somewhere else on the page. I try to comment on a post I liked, and it has me doing things to the reactions. I hit the escape key and again, I"m thrown somewhere else on the page. I hope I can help you all solve this one. It is annoying, to say the least. |

That's to say, when I come upon the like button in the reactions toolbar area while in the browse mode, NVDA automatically switches to the focus mode. And then, when I hit escape as you do, NVDA's focus is thrown somewhere else. To get rid of the inconveniences, I go to the NVDA menu, choose the advanced submenu, and then tab to the automatically set system focus to focusable elements to uncheck it just to stop NVDA's focus skipping of its own accord. When I do that, I can use www.facebook.com much better when I walk through the reactions area and the comments area. Both Chrome and NVDA are the latest versions (NVDA being the latest stable). You might stop the entire problem by turning automatic switching tbetween browse mode and focus mode off. Just one more example of too much automation and why it is better to switch between these states manually.

It doesn't fix anything. When I press enter in comments area to add my comment, it puts me in the reactions area.

Are you already in forms mode and have you tabbed to where you want to be? If you have first moved there in browse mode, then pressed enter. you may be in the wrong place because the browse mode buffer may not be lining up with the actual page, where you are when you switch to browse mode.

My suggestions may not help. Some pages don't work properly no matter what you do, but what I'm suggesting may make some pages useful. You might also achieve success by trying another browser and screen-reader. Gene -----Original Message-----

Also, I've seen the comment on some lists that Internet Explorer works better with the Face Book site. I don't know if that’s all the varieties of the site but it may solve your problem. While I generally recommend not to use IE11, in this case, it may be the thing to do.

Yes, facebook did quite well on IE. I used it on my old windows 7 box.

Oh that’s awful! How does Chrome work with facebook? I’m using the Ipad I share with my room mate. I find facebook is easier with the I pad. I’ve never tried it on windows ten yet. That’s why I’m asking how well does it work with either Microsoft edge or Chrome?

One thing that helps a bit is to get into the habit of using nvda plus spacebar to turn off focus mode. It almost seems that the escape key is getting through to facebook. If I get stuck in the reactions area, I find that clicking one of the reaction buttons using the spacebar lets me exit focus mode using nvda plus spacebar without zinging off to the bottom of the newsfeed or list of posts in a group. I am not sure about this, cause Facebook had been altering its design this or last month, which IE may have bben working well with the old site, but not the current site. |

I too have been facing general focus issues with www.facebook.com whether on Firefox or on Brave (a derivative of Chrome). In general, my recommendation is to use m.facebook.com instead which gets most of the job done with a far more accessible interface. The reason why I need to sometimes switch to facebook.com is to fully use Messenger, for which the mobile site has only basic support. Even in those short durations, facebook.com troubles me sufficiently. On another note, I have just checked the Automatically set system focus to focusable elements check box in NVDA's Advanced Settings to see if it makes a difference.
