There is something called Jarte which I haven't used personally but it is highly recommended by the folks at NVAccess (https://www.jarte.com/).

LibreOffice Writer will work. I also suspect that SoftMaker Free Office will do just fine, but have not done any accessibility testing with it (if anyone else knows for sure, please share). I don't know of a single word processor that isn't capable of handling RTF format.

True about WordPad, which I'd forgotten all about.
Even so, the probability of needing to be able to at least read other word processing file types or PDFs, even if you're not generating them, makes a more general purpose tool worth considering. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1909, Build 18363 Science has become just another voice in the room; it has lost its platform. You actually have one on your computer. It's called wordpad. Go to run and type "wordpad" sand quotes, and there you go, it should work out for you. -- Sarah Alawami, owner of TFFP. . I use jarte as well. Be aware though when you launch it you will hear "jarte plus." this is normal. You are getting the plus version which is free with a lot of limitation. For example the auto correct feature is not available and some other things, but I love and use this reader, a lot! -- Sarah Alawami, owner of TFFP. . For more info go to our website. Hi Brian and all the "faster than lightning" replies. Think I will try SoftMaker as it has a wordprocessor as well as a spread sheet section. I prefer one app for all instead of different apps. Will try it and report back. My problem with Wordpad is that it doesn't give me a page or word count which is often important to me.

Wordpad does open many document formats but it doesn't have a spell checcker. JARTE is built on Wordpad and it has a spell checker and more features than just Wordpad. I havedn't used it much and I haven't kept it updated. You can read docx files with it but you used to need a Microsoft compatibility pack (spelling) installed to be able to do so because Jarte used, perhaps it still does, the old menu version of Wordpad for its base.

We don't know any specific ways in which the persson wants to use the programs so, although we can discuss different options, there is no way to address any specific purposes the person has. Gene

Maybe, maybe not. First. Wordpad uses ribbons, starting with the Windows 7 version. The person may not be comfortable using ribbons.

How odd, I remember word pad had a spell checker at one time, but that was way back in 2005 when I was using a different system. I'm used to the ribbon now, but still love jarte as it can d a lot I wish could be done natively in windows.Sarah Alawami, owner of TFFP. . For more info go to our website. You can go to http://www.ninite.com and download either open office, or libre office. Both have word processors, are free of charge and work with NVDA. If you are just looking for a free stand alone word processor, you can get one from http://www.jarte.com Hope this helps. Tony

Wordpad never had a spell checker and I'm going back to Windows 95. There is a utility JAWS uses for training called JAWS pad which is like the old menu Wordppad and does have a spell checker.

Yes, the program which was supplied with JAWS and which is still preinstalled with JAWS is called HJPad. It is pretty much Wordpad but with a spell checker. As far as I know there is no way to acquire HJPad as a standalone program. Jarte is free and comes with a spell checker along with other features. Jarte Plus is the premium version of Jarte which contains even more features. I believe that Jarte Plus only costs $20.00.

You probably can't get it as a stand alone program but if you install a JAWS demo, it will be installed and you can use it whether you are running JAWS or not. It may be more limited than people would generally want, but you can use it.
