nvda not speaking program/icon on the desktop when pressing first letter
Fresh Start
Hi All, I am using NVDA 20.1 on a client’s windows ten pro laptop. When on the desktop or in a list of programs or files, NVDA doesn’t speak the name of a program or file when pressing it’s first letter. However, the cursor does go to the location. I know this by arrowing up and then down. I tried maximizing but didn’t cause any change in behavior. Any ideas to resolve the problem? Thanks in advance. Hi
I am sure you would of checked the following on the computer.
One that his speakers are plugged into the right whole and turned on.
On the computer the sound is not muted.
Press the windows key + letter R to bring up the run dialogue then type in sndvol then press the enter key.
The next screen that comes up will have the master volume make sure it is right up so you can hear it and not down on zero.
There is a box under it if checked it will mute the sound so make sure it is un checked.
If you can see nvda is running but not talking under that section I think there is a slider to make it louder there.
Also check when nvda is running that under the synth settings in nvda you press the nvda key + ctrl key + the letter S to bring it up.
Make sure under the synth section that it has a synth there and not set to no speech if it is set to that change it to e speak or another synth package.

Hi
Another that just come to mind is you might of accidentally turned off speech on nvda.
Use the nvda key + letter S to toggle between no speech, beep and talk then save your settings with the ctrl key + nvda key + the letter C
i guess it could easily be done if you wanted to change your synth settings but missed out the ctrl key .

The original message doesn't say there is no speech. It gives one specific condition where there is no speech, when you use first letter navigation in a list. Since there is speech, the possible solutions don't apply.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
I have no reason why no speech occurs at that one specific time. Using read current line should easily solve the problem and the command takes almost no time to execute. It may be possible to find the reason by examining the log but there are some problems that are so minor and so easily worked around that they aren't worth solving, though you may, if you wish to, pursue it, of course. Hi,

I suspect NVDA is not being notified about selection changes, sometimes caused by an add-on or a setting interfering with what NVDA is supposed to do. To test, try restarting with all add-ons disabled, and if that solves the issue, we can move onto isolating individual add-ons. Cheers, Joseph

Hi everyone, I did disable the one addon, clipspeak most current version.

There isn't any change concerning first letter navigation on the desktop or in a list of files. Speech other than that is working fine. But it would be nice to move by the first letter navigation. So if anyone has any ideas how to get it back I would appreciate them. I have NVDA on two three computers and all works fine. Thanks for responding to my questions.

Did you try reading current line after moving? You may get a solution to the problem but if it works, you can move as you wish whether the problem is solved or not.

Also,, and I doubt this will help but you never know, make sure you are in object review, not screen review. You should be in object review whether you use read current line or move without using it. Gene

Out of curiosity do you have your computer connected to a tv via a hdmi cable? or is it computer to monitor or a lap top. I have a pc connected to a tv via hdmi from the pc and it done weird stuff like you said. It would do some thing weird like that and might only say the first letter not the word on the pc some stuff it would speak correctly and others not. I think for it to work correctly I have to update the drivers for the hdmi audio or what ever it is called. It seemed laggy to at present I have not updated it so do not know if it would fix it. But I went back and done it from the speaker out on the pc to speakers and it worked properly. I thought it might of been a sound driver problem which I think it was wither either the tv causing it which I would most probably have to update on the pc. if it is not connected to a tv like I mentioned then you could cross this one off 2. gene nz

Don't worry about object and screen review modes for now because it isn't related to this issue (for those wondering: review modes are reset when NVDA restarts, so this has nothing to do with this issue). Cheers, Joseph

There isn't any change concerning first letter navigation on the desktop or in a list of files. Speech other than that is working fine. But it would be nice to move by the first letter navigation. So if anyone has any ideas how to get it back I would appreciate them. I have NVDA on two three computers and all works fine. To test, try restarting with all add-ons disabled, and if that solves the issue, we can move onto isolating individual add-ons. It gives one specific condition where there is no speech, when you use first letter navigation in a list. Since there is speech, the possible solutions don't apply. Object review is the default. You should still be on it. I doubt being in object review will help your problem, but if you are in it and use read current line, the location will be read correctly.

If you are using the desktop layout, issue the command NVDA key numpad 1. If you hear no previous review mode, you are in object navigation. If you don't know, numpad 1 is the farthest key to the left on the numpad on the row above the numpad NVDA key. Gene
