problem with search edit box in folders

seb naudet

Hello list,

i've recently updated my windows 10 pro (64-bit)
Version 2004 (10.0.19041)

and last NVDA available.

when i search for a file in a folder i now have to press enter after typing the name, and alt tab to see the result of my search.

quite complicate compared with previous version of windows.

any idea to simplify access to search results?

    thank you

JM Casey

I've had to press enter for a while now. Not sure when it started but maybe an update or so ago for me (and I'm still on 1909). But alt-tab? That is strange. You mean there is a separate window coming up? Or are results not showing up until you return to your initial file explorer window..maybe not being recognised by nVDA?

in previous windows version i only had to down arrow to display search results.

Hi

Using the folder search box has not been something I have used very much because I can usually find the file I want by quickly typing the first 1, 2 or 3 letters of the file name whilst focused in the list view, and arrowing to the required file if it’s not the one moved to immediately.  When I saw this post, I had a dig around, first in the File, Options menu item available when in File Explorer.  Move to the View tab then arrow through the Advanced Settings treeview and there are a couple of settings related to searching.  Find the   entry entitled “When typing into Listview...”  and expand it.  There are 2 mutually exclusive options “Automatically type into the Search box”  and “ Select the typed item in the view”.

I set mine to “Select item in the View” to On which means the other option is off.  This allows me to access files as described above but I can also backtab from the listview into the search box type in my search criteria and then use down arrow to access the results.  I hadn’t much success with this in the past but I also checked out the Search category in the main Windows Settings dialog (Windows+I). In the “Searching Windows” sub-category, yu can set what you want to search (I chose Classic), index your folders and also troubleshoot indexing.  After I used the Advanced Search Indexing performance” link, searching using the Search Box in File Explorer became much easier.

Cheers

Chris

Very strange.
I can't really comment on the window not refreshing (I'm guessing visually the info is there but NVDA doesn't "see it" til you return to the window)
But to me there doesn't seem a huge difference between pressing enter and down arrow.
Unfortunately I can't totally recall how things seemed to work before, but I seem to recall search populating as I was typing into the box.
So for example in my "films" folder I could start typing "holocaust" into the search box and after a few letters "cannibal holocaust" would be there, etc.

Hi,
I think I know why this is happening. But just to verify, from File Explorer, press Control+E to focus to search field. Wait about ten seconds then press Control+NVDA+F1. If it says "searchui" or "searchapp", then yes, this is Windows Search interface, not File Explorer. I look forward to a day when I can sleep better at nights knowing that folks don't have to install Windows 10 App Essentials add-on to use many features.
Cheers,
Joseph

Hi,
This confirms what I thought was happening. This is a change in Windows (since Version 1909) and it is here to stay. To access search results, you must use down arrow key. But before you do that, try installing Windows 10 App Essentials add-on and see if that makes a difference (I yes, this is another justification for me to do something about it).
Cheers,
Joseph

Windows 10 App Essentials is installed and up to date :)
but it doesn't help, down arrow only works to brows 10 previous searchs.
if i press enter on one of these previous search, i'm stuck in an empty window. the only way to see results list is to alt tab.
same problem if i type a new search.
enter, nothing then alt tab and the list is correctly displaied.

i haven't tried to modify windows settings as suggested in another message.

Hi,
Pressing Tab might not help as it shows the content of the folder in question. When I do press Enter on a search result, focus moves to folders tree view.
To help diagnose this, I need a debug log (restart NVDA with debug logging enabled), reproduce the problem, press NVDA+F1 to open the log viewer, select and copy everything, and paste it as a private email to me; I'll then inform the list about my findings).
Cheers,
Joseph

I think there are advantages to needing to press enter in search.  Some screen readers would start talking to much. And:Slow computers would have trouble keeping up when it would start searching as soon as you type.

Even my very fast laptop with ssd would really struggle and NVDA would talk to much and I'd loose focus.

It would be nice to have the option to switch behaviors.
