My mouse keeps freezing

Folks

I share my laptop with a sighted family member.

The synaptic pad mouse frequently freezes. This occurs intermittently,
without an obvious pattern.

This happens with NVDA and with JAWS, on both my win7 and win10 laptops.

I have ruled out a mechanical fault, and malware. This could be a
mouse driver or a registry key issue, but haven't explored these areas
further.

Any suggestions ?

This could definitely be secondary to an out-of-date driver, particularly on the Win10 machine.

Visit the support page for your respective machines at their manufacturers' websites and get the latest driver available for the respective OS you're using.  If there isn't one specifically for Windows 10 then I'd try whatever the latest version was for either Win7 or, more likely, Win 8.1.

What about backups or updates? I find many back up programs create this freezing then working again issue. I don't quite know if its just processor overload or what. I luckily cannot use a mouse but before you start looking for mouse specific issues, see if the rest of windows also slows down first.

Well synaptic.com should have generic drivers for all their mice.

Windows 10 in theory should handle this though itself.

your laptop manufacturer should have a driver unless the thing is really old.

Hi Paul,


I have a similar problem on my work laptop (a lenovo yoga).

What is strange in my case, is that the mouse can be perfectly manipulated while the touchpad somehow seems frozen.. is that the same in your case? If so, this is probably a driver issue (although I did not have the time to check this further).
