Intermittent Task Bar Problem
Gary
I have had this problem for several years on multiple computer
systems, and I should have reported it before, but it's difficult to describe the behavior I'm experiencing. As it requires a full system reboot to fix, I can't ignore it any more and I'll attempt to describe it now. When using the arrow keys to cycle through the tabs on the task bar, the navigation is typically fluid. In other words, I don't have to listen to the full tab label before hitting a left or right arrow key to read the next tab. Well, occasionally, with no rhyme or reason or pattern which I can detect, NVDA will stop speech interupt when navigating through the tabs, so every time I hit an arrow key, I hear the _entire_ task bar's contents repeated back to me. Restarting NVDA does not fix this, only a reboot of my entire system. I am running Windows 10, and it just happened on my pc which is using about 3.4 out of 32 available RAM. I hope I'm describing the behavior of NVDA sufficiently, but if I'm not, I welcome questions. Rebooting my machine every few days is pretty inconvenient, especially since Windows Updates already make me do this at least once a week. I tried searching for someone having brought this up in the past, but I failed finding anything. Thanks in advance for any help. Gary

I want to be sure we are talking about the same thing. I am not assuming you are doing this, but I want to avoid any possibility of miscommunication. I want to be sure you are talking about the task bar, not the system tray. If the task bar, have you tried alt tabbing as a work around? If the system tray, have you tried the system tray dialog, available as an NVDA add-on as a workaround?

Hi Gene,
I mean the task bar, not the system tray. Yes, Alt+Tab works, but only cycles between two windows. When I'm working, I have at least 8 programs I switch between on the task bar. Gary

I don't know how things are set up in Windows 10 or how they can be changed, but maybe that behavior can be adjusted.

I haven't seen this issue, but I don't use the task bar like that.

Alt+tab doesn't just switch between two windows. Hold down alt, and press tab. It should say the window you're going to switch to, which should be the most recent one you were in. If you don't want that one, keep alt held down and press tab until you find the one you want. If you went too far, alt shift tab or just let it wrap around. You can also press windows 1 through 0 to switch to that entry on the task bar. If you don't want the first few slots taken up by the default pinned apps like Edge, you can unpin them from the context menu. You can also pin the apps you always want on the taskbar, so they'll show up regardless if they're open or not.

Hi Gary Have you tried adjusting the parameters for task bar icons? Open the settings app (Windows+I), open the “personalisation” category tab to the sub-categories list and arrow down to the task bar entry and press enter. Tab through the controls and try adjusting those rlating to task bar icons.
Cheers Chris

Wow, I did not know these alternative ways to access the task bar, such as holding down the Alt key or the Windows key shortcuts. I like these. Thanks! :)
I'll also try adjusting task bar settings, but now it's great to know I have other, easier ways to cycle through all my running programs! Gary

Be careful when doing that as if you have winwizard, it won't work as that is relegated to the window behind the window you are focused on in an app. so I use windows t, then shift tab to the view task list button.
