messages aren't read out automatically in the mail app

Rosemarie Chavarria

Hi, everyone,

I’m trying the mail app. I was using thunderbird but it became sluggish so I decided to try the mail app again. I used to be able to hit enter on a message and it would be read out automatically. Has something changed? Now I have to go to the top of the message, hit insert down-arrow and I can read the message. How can I get messages to read out automatically in the mail app?

Thanks for your help in advance.

When in the mail app press control-nvda-b and check Automatic Say All on page load check box

Hi rosemarie! I cannot hear the email read out when I press enter either. I have to arrow down through the email, and read it line by line or word by word, just like you read an article. Nvda works best with the Windows 10 mail app. Only nvda works consistently. Jaws keeps reading the title of a message that I have already deleted. Narrator isn't too bad, but nvda works much better in the Windows 10 mail app as your screen reader. That is why I use all three screen readers, nvda, jaws, and narrator. Take care guys sitting on our balcony 65°, a little chilly. David

Try whatever key you use as your NVDA. Key plus A.  I couldn’t think of the name of that key when I was talking with you this morning.  Do you use the insert key?  I think the shift key is easier.  I know you don’t have a lap top.  I do.  Let me know if this works.

Are you using NVDA?  If so, are you using the latest rc that just came out?  I this was fixed inthe bata cycle not sure as I do not have the rc installed and do not rely on the mail app.

Hi,

An earlier version of this bug was fixed a while ago, but resurfaced after Windows 10 Mail’s executable file was renamed this year. I deployed a fix in Windows 10 App Essentials add-on back in February this year but waited for the new app to go live for everyone in summer before sending an official fix to NV Access for review. The next NVDA version in development (2020.4) will come with a built-in fix.

Cheers,

Joseph

There’s an add-on called windows 10 app essentials. That makes windows 10 work better and that includes the mail app. I installed it and now I can hit enter on a message and it’s read out automatically.

There’s an add-on called windows 10 app essentials. That makes windows 10 work better and that includes the mail app. I installed it and now I can hit enter on a message and it’s read out automatically.

Try whatever key you use as your NVDA. Key plus A.  I couldn’t think of the name of that key when I was talking with you this morning.  Do you use the insert key?  I think the shift key is easier.  I know you don’t have a lap top.  I do.  Let me know if this works.

Hi,

Yes, you can get it from community add-ons website (addons.nvda-project.org).

As for what Windows 10 App Essentials can do (speaking as the author of this add-on): too many to list. But just to give you a highlight of its power:

  • Early access to upcoming Windows 10 features through accessibility enhancements.
  • Early access to solutions to Windows 10 issues noted by NVDA users while it is being developed.
  • Detecting more Windows 10 controls.
  • Announcing search suggestion count in Settings, Microsoft Store, and other search fields where NVDA does not announce first search result automatically.
  • Announcing product download status in Microsoft Store.
  • Browse mode while reading emails with Windows 10 Mail.
  • Support for modern search field in File Explorer.
  • Support for emoji panel and other modern input features on top of what NVDA already provides.
  • Improved support for Settings app on top of what NVDA provides.
  • Assisting in debugging events coming from Windows 10 apps and controls.

In the past, the add-on used to provide the following which are now part of NVDA or became unnecessary in recent releases:

  • Initial and more complete support for emoji panel and other modern input features, now part of NVDA.
  • Initial support for Chromium Edge (early 2020), now part of NVDA.
  • Fixing bugs which are now part of NVDA such as reducing verbosity when performing certain commands in recent Microsoft 365 releases.
  • Playing search suggestion sounds, now part of NVDA.
  • Detecting dialog boxes scattered around Windows 10, now part of NVDA.
  • One of the first add-ons to adopt add-on update feature, now part of Add-on Updater add-on.

The add-on isn’t as powerful as say, StationPlaylist or NVDA Remote, but it is considered influential.

Cheers,

Joseph

Yes, you go to the manage add-ons in the tools menu of NVDA. Then you tab to where it says “get add-ons”. Then go down by headings until you get to the windows 10 app essentials. You’ll be asked if you want to update to the latest version of that add-on. Tab to the yes button and either hit space bar or enter.

Hope this helps.

NVDA Official Add-Ons Repository Page

You can activate the link for any one of the add-ons you might like and download it from its page.  If NVDA is running, all you need to do is to select the add-on file and activate it and the NVDA Add-Ons Manager will take care of the rest.  You can also handle things directly through the Add-Ons manager, NVDA+N,T,A,Enter will bring it up.  Activate the Get Add-Ons button and you'll end up on the repository page I referenced at the start of this message.

Hi,

Provided that users are using supported Windows 10 releases, as Windows 10 App Essentials require recent Windows 10 releases (current release supports Version 1909/November 2019 Update).
