Hi
Does nvda speak the items under your finger when you move it around on the t-screen?
If so you may be able to use it like a mouse.
A single tap to select an item and double tapping an item on the screen to activate it.
Single and double taps on the corners of the screen may be assigned as short cuts.

Hi all
Quick update on the situation.
I upgraded my tablet to windows 10, just for curiosity's sake.
And after fighting for a long time to get narator to not start automatically, and NVDA to do so. I can report that NVDA is working absolutely wonderfully.
True, it takes some getting used to, as it works on the concept of object navigation.
Now, I plan on installing the enhanced touch addon, and I believe that will make things a lot nicer.
It's quick, it's responsive, and honestly I only really have a couple of complaints.
1. the lack of options for navigation, for example, navigating by heading, link, form field, etc. however, I believe this is an option with the enhanced touch addon.
2. typing
Typing is very useable, works the same as touch-typing on iOS, so the letter is entered once you lift your finger. however, NVDA announces button, after every letter, which is a little annoying.
Having said all this, if some pressure was put upon the developers to try and improve touch navigation, it could be a really, really beautiful thing.

To my surprise, it is very straight forward to use, all gestures work as suggested, navigating is simple and straight forward.
I'm able to do basic things very easily, launching apps, browsing the internet, etc. It's just a real shame that typing is exactly as standard typing is on iOS, i.e. having to double tap each letter. If this was fixed, this would not be a bad screen-reader at all in my opinion, based on early views.
If anyone knows if the typing can be fixed, or if anyone would like a demonstration, please let me know either way.

Out of all the people who have said touch screens are not working very well, and those, including myself, who've either agreed to make audio demos proving this, or have! Made audio demos showing it, those who swear to God, quote unquote, that it quote: just works, have been incredibly reluctant to make any demos showing their side of it working correctly. Hmm, I wonder why this might be?

I've seen similar comments on other screenreaders as well. To be honest reading all of these, I am thinking that touch is going to be a bit of a loser on anything bigger than a smart phone with special gestures for blind users.
I'm sure there is somebody out there that thinks its great, but I have a low frustration tolerance and on most tests I've tried with Windoze touch and screenreaders, you can keep em, I'm sorry.

hi. i have three windows 8.1 tablets.
a dell venu pro, hp stream 7" and winbook 7" (which has a full-size usb port)
first, i would install the classic shell start menu emulator.
second, if needed, get a dongle to use a full-size usb keyboard.
third, use a bluetooth keyboard if you wish; i do for portability.
but, will need the full size keyboard to enable the bluetooth.
in my humble opinion, just forget touch with the windows tablet and
nvda. the screenreader works great with keyboard and that is fine with
me.

Hi. With mouse coordinate tones turned on, do you have mouse noises when you move your finger around the screen?? Some devices use a touch pad device on the touch screen and have a driver that makes it somewhat function like a touch screen but it isn't but a pointing device, so accessibility layer for touch doesn't necessarily work well. Try Narrator, hold in its windows key and press volume up. Have narrator closed before you do else only one screen reader can have access to accessibility. This could also explain your trouble with NVDA would you be having narrator running when you start NVDA somehow? If so NVDA can't have access to the accessibility layer. Well quite, but to be honest, the gestures are just not working. As
I said, the simplest one of opening the nvda menu has no effect at
all when I do it.

yeah you do lose some of the touch screen functionality when using together with a screen reader
Narrator is probably the best to use in conjunction with a touch screen and gestures, but that has its own issues as youn may know
you may want to try the enhanced gestures add-on for nvda, that may improve things a bit
