What do we like for a media player besides Winamp?

John Isige

Hi all. I'm looking for a Winamp replacement, since it keeps crashing, apparently the amount of music I have is just too much for it. I like Winamp's minimal interface. I don't have to tab all over the place to get to things, I don't have to hit weird alt function key combinations, stuff like that. I loathe iTunes, in case anybody wants to suggest it. Also, I'm looking for something modern, or at least maintained, so please don't start telling me about how if you find just the right website, you can download a version of Windows Media Player from twelve ears ago that's awesome!

I tried playing with Groove a bit. It works, but there seems to be no keyboard shortcuts to speak of, at least not that I saw, and it was tab central through a bunch of stuff I don't really care about. But maybe I just need to learn it better. I organize my own music, so other than pointing it at a folder and letting it go on random or shuffle or whatever, I don't think I need an organizer. I thought of VLC but I'm not sure if that has enough control or accessibility, though I gather you can make whatever keyboard shortcuts for it you want, so it's a possibility.

If anybody's got recommendations, I'd surely appreciate some. I'd keep using Winamp, but apparently 200 plus GB of music is the point at which Winamp throws up its hands and runs away to hide in a closet. So I guess it's time to use something else, which is too bad, because I still dig Winamp.

Stephen

what about foobar2000. The last time I tried it, it was quite accessible, it might take a little getting used to though, but you can easily assign your own shortcut keys.
Cheers.

I'm considering it. The only thing I don't like is that it seems to use
the alphanumeric keys for typing, no matter where it is, which doesn't
make a lot of sense to me. That means you can't really use them to do
shortcuts. The typical thing I've seen people use instead are the
function keys, but my laptop's weird about those. It's a definite
possibility though, yeah.

Brian's Mail list account

Really? The question is why does it crash.
Normally if its used just to do the playing not the actual running of a database its still got the edge over other ones, you need to stop the portable device detector though as that has always crashed randomly.

An alternative approach may be not to use the Winamp Library at all.

I have never ever imported music into the Winamp library and simply use Explorer or Explorer ++ to organise my Music

I then use Winamp from the context menu of the folder or simply to launch individual Mp3 files.

If I want to organise playlists I use Mp3Tag to do this.

Additionally I have  also had problems with Winamp on occasion but resolved it by in-installing and downloading the version available on Nimite.com.

This kseems  to work fine at the moment on both my desktop and Laptop.

hi since you use foobar do you need it to remember every file you play in A play list?

Do you like it that way.

So when it plays something it is stilled stored in A list so you can play it again later if you would like to.

If you don't like that future or no how to disable it.

Can you please share how?

Thanks for all the recommendations. IIRC, since people seem to be really
worried about this, I never touch the Winamp library. I hit shift-l and
point it at my albums folder. It starts playing but eventually crashes
at some point. The only other thing I've ever used to load music into
Winamp was the playlist editor.

I tried playing with Groove a bit. It works, but there seems to be
no keyboard shortcuts to speak of, at least not that I saw, and it
was tab central through a bunch of stuff I don't really care

I thought of VLC but I'm not sure if that has enough control or

If anybody's got recommendations, I'd surely appreciate some. I'd
keep using Winamp, but apparently 200 plus GB of music is the
point at which Winamp throws up its hands and runs away to hide in

bad, because I still dig Winamp.

Yes, really. It will be in the middle of playing music, and it will
crash. I'm using a minimal installation, no device sync stuff, no Winamp
Agent, no library. I have no idea why it crashes and I'm frankly not
interested in dicking around with it to find out. That's probably
because I had to reset my PC twice in the last month or so, so this is
my second go-round of reinstalling all and sundry. So at this point,
I'll just take a media player that works if it's decent.

Normally if its used just to do the playing not the actual running of
a database its still got the edge over other  ones, you need to  stop
the portable device detector though as that has always crashed randomly.

I have used groove music which seems to be, a APP. that came with win 10.
I'm not sure if it's suppose to be a replacement for the media player?
I think win amp is still the best for me after using it for many years.
Keep us posted on how you like this music player.

Hey John et al.

I use Winamp too, but I'm not gonna sit here and tell you it should work and you should jump through hoops to get it to work on your system. I've found over the years that there are lots of seemingly inexplicable reasons why the same programme might behave differently on different systems, and like you said, it taxes the patience and you may as well just use what actually does work. I fussed a little more getting Winamp to work on my Windows 10 machine, because the guy who built my system did m the favour of setting it up, only he did it wrong. It works now and I'm rather attached to it. But I also use VlC. VLC is my video player, and probably always will be. Frankly I don't think there is a better video player anywhere. It plays all formats out of the box, pretty much, and unlike in winamp, it's really easy to select different audio tracks from an .avi or .mkv file. There's a lot you can do with it that I haven't totally figured out, and some of the screens are a bit iffy from an accessibility standpoint, but I think we already talked about that. I even figured out how to adjust the equalizer and keep the settings intact, though I think Winamp's is more user friendly.

Thanks for all the recommendations. IIRC, since people seem to be really worried about this, I never touch the Winamp library. I hit shift-l and point it at my albums folder. It starts playing but eventually crashes at some point. The only other thing I've ever used to load music into Winamp was the playlist editor.

Do you like it that way.

So when it plays something it is stilled stored in A list so you can
play it again later if you would like to.

If you don't like that future or no how to disable it.

Can you please share how?

Yeah....I think a big reason I still use winamp is that I love the playlist
editor. No need for the library at all. With the editor it's easy to add and
remove files, move them around, randomise them, etc. I could even just dump
all my music in there, randomise, and it'd play forever.
