New Skype Installation a Complete Disaster!

Gene

There are sites where JAVA scripts are necessary.  You have different alternatives.  You can have more than one copy of firefox on your machine.  You can have whatever version you have now with JAVA scripts off, and a portable version, the same version but a portable one, with JAVA scripts on.  You would use one when you want to have JAVA scripts off and the other when you want them on.

You can turn scripts on when you need them in Firefox in about:config, and then turn them off again, but that is inconvenient.  You can use a program like noscript.  I haven't used it to any extent and I'm not sure how convenient or accessible it is.

I didn't say anything about your sincerity.  You obviously believe what you are saying.  You never present any basis for it nor do you explain why computer and security experts who say you should use such programs are wrong.

This appears to verge on classic conspiracy theory thinking.  With all the businesses and government agencies and schools and scientific organizations in the world who rely on such programs, and with all the white hat hackers in the world, if a program were selling information stolen by their programs, it would be headline news.

If you trust malware designers to keep your computer safe more than reputable antimalware programs, that's your choice.  It is not logical but that's your choice.

gene,
i disabled javascript and many features of firefox.
but i said with complete sincerity that i dont trust any security
programs and never use them.
i changed many settings in options and also about:config
i realy wish to know which setting i change and i cant login to my
quora account with disabling javascript!
can you please tell me changing what setting may caused this problem for me?
openning sites with javascript, displaying frames and flash content is
extremely difficult, specially for screen reader users.
i realy dont believe in updating softwares, operating system and
concerning about technology.
it causes just afraid, worried, and sadness to always be change, think
about beeing updating and just use new technologies.

There will always be niche users, but XP is still being used by one heck of

It's unfortunate you have such a well developed ability to ignore facts and

real situations and possibilities. Malware can attack your computer
without
you doing anything incorrect. there is a growing problem of malware
infesting hacked ads even on the most reputable sites. So you trust
malware
makers not to attack your computer without your knowledge more than you
trust reputable malware companies to gibve you some amount of meaningful
protection? There are malware program manufacturers that are reputable and

very highly thought of. Not trusting anyone in the context you speak of is

irrational and ignores well established facts. And to make matters worse,
you are using a vulnerable version of Windows and an an increasingly aging
browser that won't have any security updates for XP users in about six
months if you use the ESR version. You are also not using the ESR version
as far as I know which means your browser is increasingly vulnerable
because
it hasn't received updates in quite some time.

Are you at least disabling JAVA scripts unless they are needed? That will
give you quite a bit of protection on the Internet.

As I said, your ability to completely ignore facts is unfortunate and
evidently, well entrenched.

I have used NVDA successfully with Skype for many years.
Suddenly, tonight, on my Windows 7 laptop, when I entered
Skype, a new version was forcibly installed, something like
Version 8.1.2, and it presented me with an interface that I
could not comprehend with NVDA. None of the shortcut keys
that I previously used would work. I received a call from a
friend right after this forced installation and could not
answer it, because the usual alt-PageUp key combo for
answering a call was useless, as were all other previous
shortcut keys. What is the solution to this problem. I
totally uninstalled Skype for now. Do we give up on Skype
as NVDA
users, or install a different version or perhaps some other chat
program?

Do we give up on Skype
as NVDA
users, or install a different version or perhaps some other chat
program?

I'm not being unfair.  I don't object to Zara using XP and I didn't say I do.  I made my comments because Zara said she doesn't use any antimalware programs because she doesn't trust any of them.  In addition to her statement, I know from other messages that she is using XP and she is using a version of Firefox that isn't receiving security updates.  One security risk piled on another piled on another.  If Zara has JAVA scripts disabled, that will give her a good deal of protection on the Internet.  But in today's security environment, not using antimalware protection is, to understate the case, a very bad idea.

It's unfortunate you have such a well developed ability to ignore facts and

infesting hacked ads even on the most reputable sites.  So you trust malware
makers not to attack your computer without your knowledge more than you
trust reputable malware companies to gibve you some amount of meaningful

irrational and ignores well established facts.  And to make matters worse,
you are using a vulnerable version of Windows and an an increasingly aging
browser that won't have any security updates for XP users in about six
months if you use the ESR version.  You are also not using the ESR version
as far as I know which means your browser is increasingly vulnerable because
it hasn't received updates in quite some time.

Are you at least disabling JAVA scripts unless they are needed?  That will

Do we give up on Skype
as NVDA
users, or install a different version or perhaps some other chat
program?

It's unfortunate you have such a well developed ability to ignore facts and real situations and possibilities.  Malware can attack your computer without you doing anything incorrect.  there is a growing problem of malware infesting hacked ads even on the most reputable sites.  So you trust malware makers not to attack your computer without your knowledge more than you trust reputable malware companies to gibve you some amount of meaningful protection?  There are malware program manufacturers that are reputable and very highly thought of.  Not trusting anyone in the context you speak of is irrational and ignores well established facts.  And to make matters worse, you are using a vulnerable version of Windows and an an increasingly aging browser that won't have any security updates for XP users in about six months if you use the ESR version.  You are also not using the ESR version as far as I know which means your browser is increasingly vulnerable because it hasn't received updates in quite some time.

Are you at least disabling JAVA scripts unless they are needed?  That will give you quite a bit of protection on the Internet.

As I said, your ability to completely ignore facts is unfortunate and evidently, well entrenched.

If using xp, and not using machines with amd processors, the anti virus Microsoft Security essentials is still updating.
Do not use Skype on old machines, too many drop outs.

I am on the look out for a decent browser for an xp machine as firefox 52 takes an age to boot up and also seems unwilling to show some frames when run under xp.

Most of the other options stopped supporting xp some time ago. I did notice some stuff both on github and on more obscure web sites about people working on windows hacks to give xp some of the extra routines found in later windows. Myself I'd view these with a little suspicion as if the user is going to trust unknown hackers to extend windows, then said unknown hackers might in fact be wolves in sheep's clothing.

hi brian i completely agree with you about problems of skype.
skype is getting more useless and problematic every day and i
uninstalled it completely and could not sign in anymore after
reinstallation.
i even could not use gw connect which i used in the past.
do you mean that microsoft changed the protocols and gw never works
again and even skype classic is never available in the future?
as you know, i realy hate updating forceable specially for updating
just for update like skype without any useful feature or
understandable and important change!
i did not see any program except skype and microsoft to force the
users for update!
hi shaun.
i completely agree that we should use our own desires without force.
i heard that one company make laptops and does not obey the rule of
just updating!
they releases drivers for different operating systems and dont forget
the old ones. the company is fujitsu.

It does.

I have switched all my users to skype universal to keep the software
updated but to be honest skype classic is in the tablets section so
unless ms decides that windows tablets need to update to universal to
which they will probably do eventually then maybe.

At any rate even if skype does die, they will have to change the
minimal version on server to have it not even work and they only just
did that last year and that was for 7.2 and older, up to this point
you could probably still work with 6 or 5 or 4 or even 3 maybe not 2
but even so, who knows.

This new skype 8 will last till the end of win 8x at any rate.

It would be good if ms let us blinks use our own windows desktops,
shells and interfaces for their cores so we could use their stuff
without their junk.

Well skype classic is your friend.

And yeah I do feel like doing that, I actually asked ms if it would remain so.

I can't make heads or tails of the universal app or the new skype.

My skype doesn't update anymore but to be honest, if this continues, I may have a windows 10 or whatever system for games, and maybe xp or something for offline stuff.

If blindy spaciffic computers got cheaper I am tempted to just forget about standard computers alltogether.

I was hoping skype would get better.

Do we give up on Skype
as NVDA
users, or install a different version or perhaps some other chat
program?

Yeah I know this, its a pitty ms discontinued skypekit.

I really think its high time for users to have a choice of some sort of interface controler software and something based on the core of windows, I don't see any reason we can run whatever interface we want since we basically do that with themes in windows.

I mean they do that in linux.

For example I don't see any reason I can't continue using windows xp or 7 for the rest of my life if I want or even win98, true having a different interface over my core means I probably will have less features in the interface and maybe less abilities but I can live with that, maybe you can switch interfaces I mean we have vertual desktops now so why not interfaces.

Or parts there of.

I will still use the same core subsystems, and in the background the same shells and security systems but I can switch how I want.

I like win10 apps interface for apps, I'd prefur the older control panel classic interfaces, the old win7 search box or even xp's start menu, non cluttered windows, no ribbons etc.

Classic skype and other things.

The older stuff was accessible.

I see no reason that this can't be done, it would be a theme extention at most, linux does it.

Since skype is actually part of my job I have to agree that is is getting harder to use but I have the don't update button on and it all works. I love the mac interface, at least the old one. It's easy to use and I can jump from place to place. I can even launch two instences of skype with the touch of a script and each having two different  accounts..

But yeah since skype is part of my job I am stuck with it.

Hi,
As far as NVDA side goes, send me feedback as soon as possible.
To whoever asked about NVDA add-on for Skype universal app, this is part of Windows 10 App Essentials add-on (mine, way before JAWS scripts came along). I do know the person who wrote the JAWS scripts and plan to ask him for collaboration. Also, for those watching GitHub, expect to see a pull request regarding Skype universal app in a few days.
Cheers,
Joseph

I understand that Skype have moved to new protocols. There may be architectural reasons why Microsoft decided to redesign it, and they decided to update/modernize the user interface along the way.

I found a forum post, apparently from Microsoft, stating that the "classic" version will be deprecated soon. If you're encountering accessibility issues with the Windows 10 version, I would suggest notifying Microsoft, since the older version may at some point soon no longer be updated or supported.

Because the world is comprised primarily of sighted people who crave visual stimulation.  Accessibility of programs and devices to those without eyesight is a distant second consideration. That is primarily why Skype was dramatically changed to its current incarnation.  It is a visual gold mine!

Really? Do we have a full list anywhere? I called the Microsoft
disability thingy and asked about documentation for the new skype, and
they never got back to me. That suggests it either doesn't exist, or
they're super lazy. Nice folks though.

I stopped using it because, like another poster, I couldn't figure out
how to answer calls and such, plus it seems like it needed to be open
to really do anything with it, and it wouldn't minimize to the system
tray or such. It was also slow, e.g. at bringing up conversations, and
it didn't seem to read them very well. It tended to read multiple
messages when you arrowed around. I freely admit part of this might be
my inability to use it, which is why I asked for documentation from
Microsoft. But all the documentation I can find seems to be for the
old skype. I got tired of messing with it and went back to old skype.

Â
Â
Do we give up on Skype
as NVDA
users, or install a different version or perhaps some other chat
program?

To me, currently Skype and for that matter universal apps has lost the

all look completely different, when at least in classic windows one
knew you had a menu bar toolbars etc, and not this apparent throw
everything up in the air and where it drops is where it stays muddle

A bit of topic drift here.
However, Back in the old days the same engine we built for use as Dr Spectrum, could be used to write grammatically correct sentences, but sense was a whole other ball game. I'd like to think that nowadays with machine learning a bit better understood that it might soon be possible to create software this way.

Well you may want to hold that thought a little longer.

I read yesterday that someone loaded every harry potter book, and fanfic into an ai to see if it could write one using all that material and it did write a comedy type thing, I mean it could do it but it was weird.

Even if an ai did write the next software package I am not sure if that would fully work for us if it did it generally.

thingy and asked about documentation for the new skype, and they never
got
back to me. That suggests it either doesn't exist, or they're super
lazy.
Nice folks though.

I stopped using it because, like another poster, I couldn't figure out
how
to answer calls and such, plus it seems like it needed to be open to
really
do anything with it, and it wouldn't minimize to the system tray or
such. It
was also slow, e.g. at bringing up conversations, and it didn't seem to
read
them very well. It tended to read multiple messages when you arrowed
around.
I freely admit part of this might be my inability to use it, which is
why I
asked for documentation from Microsoft. But all the documentation I can
find
seems to be for the old skype. I got tired of messing with it and went
back
to old skype.

Hi,
Skype universal app does have shortcut keys, such as Alt+1 to go to
conversations, Alt+2 for contacts, Alt+3 for bots and so on).
Cheers,

That's such a slugish and obnoxious way to navigate a programme,
really.
Come on Microsoft.

In the new Windows app thing? Sure. In fact I think it's the only way
to
use it really.

Can you still tab around Skype like normal, though? I'm curious,
because I've never really used keyboard shortcuts. Just menus and
tabbing between options.

Awesome. It's gone. Thanks. I'll go install the classic version here

OK, I didn't think it worked that way for universal apps.

I'll give it a try.

The same way you uninstall any program:

Press your Windows key and type remove

Arrow down to "Add and Remove Programs and press Enter

Arrow down to Skype in the list of programs

So then, I guess my next question would be how to uninstall the

rescue. LOL!

Yes, installer downloaded from both links works with windows10.

Skype forces to use Universal app only in 8.x. I could install
7.x (version downloadable from the two links sent) in Win10
without problems some weeks ago.

Wow! Thank you for this link. Will this work with Windows 10 as
well? I'm not much a fan of the Universal app version of Skype.
Don't get me wrong. It's O... Kayyyy, but, I definitely don't
prefer it.

I don't have all the issue with Skype that a lot of people seem
to have, in fact, I personally enjoy using it, so if I can get
that Universal version uninstalled in Windows 10, and get rid
of the classic version, that would be fantastic!

Rich,

Remove your current skype installation and install the skype
classic version from this link: If you do not remove the old
installation, you will get two skype versions after
installation
of the classic version.

I'm not sure how one gets the old version.

the

draconian to me.

Do we give up on Skype as
NVDA
users, or install a different version or perhaps some other
chat
program?
