Try switching off Emphasis in the document formatting dialog NVDA+Control+d.

This is another example of a setting that should not be on by default. This is a rather new ability. NVDA will now announce emphasis indicators. I'm not sure what they are, but they are announced as you have described. Context is usually enough and it doesn't benefit listeners most of the time to hear this.

To turn it off, use control NVDA key d to open document formatting.
Tab to emphasis, uncheck it, then press enter. The dialog will close and you won't hear emphasis indicators any longer.

Here is the odd thing. emphasis was unchecked. Marked highlighted text was checked so I unchecked it.

You might want to check setting for NVDA, because its not on by default.
