Hi,
Acasionally, I get a dialogue that pops up that says checking for new software. Is NVDA just checking for software, or is it installing fixes? Thanks Chris

That sounds like the Apple Software Update tool to me. If you have iTunes installed on your computer, the Apple Software Update tool launches periodically to check for iTunes updates. It does not display a window on screen unless there are updates to install, but NVDA is still detecting it.

If it's truly NVDA that's doing it, then my guess is that it is actually looking for updates to install. If you have the snapshot version, then it will do this more often. Ben

NVDA.
Perhaps you run some sort of program that looks at
your computer and updates programs and drivers. If the program doesn't
identify itself and you have no idea what it is, perhaps you should look through
add/remove programs and see if you see anything that might be that kind of
program.

I get the same sort of message. I thought it was FireFox doing it, but

it could be iTunes instead. I usually only get that message, as best as I remember, when I have both programs running so who knows!

It is ,in fact, the Apple Software Update tool. I can say this because when I had iTunes installed on my system, that would come up periodically. But when I uninstalled it for reasons other than the dialogue popping up (I also had to uninstall the Apple Software Updater separately), it stopped. I also don't recall seeing that dialogue before I messed around with iTunes. Noah

Thanks for the help. I do have itunes on my computer, so it's probably that. By the way, how can you tell if it's NVDA installing a fix?

If you have i"Tunes installed, the Apple updater
service will check for new software about once a day, and that message will
appear during the process. It has nothing to do with NVDA as Gene
said.

As far as I know, NVDA will not automatically install anything, but prompt

you first that an update to NVDA is available. It does make it very clear that it's an NVDA update. Once you choose to download and install the update, it will download it first, then prompt you once again to install. Nothing happens without you being prompted first. Travis

apple does check for updates from time to time.

Its never happened when I have accessed things, if it is popping up a dialog for more than a second with updates then you should do that. If its popping up an error, it could be an overloaded server or something is actually down off the net.

Yes and unless something is wrong or something is there to do, it shouldn't last for more than a few seconds.

There may be a task for it in tasks I forget I don't touch it and if you have devices active using itunes you probably want to leave all automated apple stuff active for optimal performance anyway.

You won't know nvda is checking unless there is something to update then it asks you to update then to donate or not and then it downloads, asks you to confirm install. after that uac asks you, and sometimes a security run box before that. So there is no way you can miss things.

Confirmed! On my friend's computer when she had windows 7 witch bit the dust. She had apple softwhere on it like ITunes and it always checked itself. You had to update it constantly.
